What is a Minimalist Resume Template?

A minimalist resume template is simply a resume that favors your personal content over flashy design features. Rather than including many different sections, entries, or additional pieces of content, a minimalist resume template encourages you to stick to the basics only. Explaining your experience in as few words as possible, focusing on measurable data and results, streamlines your resume and, when that’s paired with a professionally designed minimalist resume template, looks visually appealing as well.

Another big benefit of minimalist resume templates is that they make it much easier for hiring managers to understand what skills and achievements you could bring to a role. While bells and whistles can have their place in a job search, minimalist resumes are usually much clearer and easy to read, which means that when a hiring manager views your resume, their initial scan can be more favorable to you.

How to Write a Minimalist Resume

Minimalist resumes focus on facts above all else. Cover letters and skills sections are better places to demonstrate your soft skills – a work experience entry on a minimalist resume, for example, should be brief and to the point.

The best thing you can do when writing a minimalist resume is to focus on numbers and data. If you’ve increased profits in your current role, don’t just say that – back it up with the exact percentage amount. In a minimalist resume, each word should be carefully selected to have the most impact, and quantifiable results like that are the easiest way to convey your skills while taking up the least amount of space on your resume.

Of course, that doesn’t mean a minimalist resume is lacking anything! Minimalist resumes should always include standard sections such as work experience, education, and skills. Depending on your industry, sections like a resume summary, awards, and volunteer experience may also be included. However, think carefully about including extra sections – in a minimalist resume, the point is to clear away any excess information that isn’t directly relevant to the job you’re applying for.

When to Use a Minimalist Resume

Minimalist resumes can be used for nearly every job search, across all industries. However, they are more suited to industries that work with quantifiable results, such as finance or technology. Roles in these industries usually come with strict, objective criteria to meet – a minimalist resume can be a quick and efficient way to demonstrate that you meet them.

A minimalist resume can also be useful for new graduates who don’t have much work experience! Keeping your resume short and to the point is a good way to avoid it looking blank or sparse.

When not to Use a Minimalist Resume

Minimalist resumes can be a great way for a hiring manager to quickly ascertain your key skills for a particular position. However, there are some instances where you should NOT use a minimalist resume.

One example of this is when you’re applying for a position that requires a full CV, such as academic roles that tend to ask for detailed descriptions of former educational positions, grants, publications, conferences, and presentations. CVs such as these want every detail of your work history, so a minimalist approach isn’t recommended here.

Minimalist resumes tend to use very few colors, or white with a singular pop of color. This is another factor designed to keep the focus of your resume on your achievements, and, in general, is a good strategy to implement whether you’re writing a minimalist resume or not.

When the background of your resume is white, and your body text is black (or navy blue or a similar dark color), you can choose nearly any color you’d like for your pop of color. The only combination that may not work is light colors, as they may not be easily readable against a white background.

For accessibility purposes, occasionally a resume with a black background and white text could be used. However, this isn’t the standard and could come across as jarring to hiring managers if it’s not been requested.

Minimalist Resume Colors to Avoid

Readability should come first when creating any resume, and that goes double for minimalist resumes. Avoid clashing or garish color combinations such as orange and pink, or more than one bright color. Neon green could look nice in a minimalist resume if everything else is in black and white, but if you already have a bright pink banner, for example, things will begin to feel busy.
