My Teaching Philosophy

Over the years I have encountered many quotes from a variety of sources, some scholarly, some not so much.  One quote that is always in the forefront of my mind as I create lesson plans, and as I stand before a class of students is from Benjamin Franklin which states "Tell me I forget. Teach me I remember.  Involve me and I learn."

I feel that a constructivist approach to education affords the students with the opportunity to "construct" knowledge by discovery and is the key to successful learning.  To facilitate a level of understanding that can only come as a result of student engagement and curiosity, the teacher must not only convey relevance to the students lives, but must also empower them to have a say with regard to the lessons and encourage responsibility for their own learning.  The constructivist method of education also lends itself easily to deliver effective differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all types of learners as tasks can be made less difficult but can maintain their complexity.  This ensures that all students have an equal opportunity to develop higher order thinking skills and utilize critical thought processes.

By nature I have an authoritative style of teaching, being supportive of every student while taking care to establish clear classroom objectives.  Promoting a relaxed alertness in the learning environment, I feel, is a key factor in establishing trust between teacher and student.  I have found that an environment that is conducive to learning is warm, stimulating, inviting, and is one in which the students feel safe and comfortable.  It is also one in which the learning objectives are clearly stated so that students are aware of exactly what is expected.  It is my goal as a teacher to effectively create this type of environment in every classroom in which I am privileged to teach so that I may properly prepare my students for life beyond the classroom walls.
