Responsible for ensuring that Packt continuously delivers premium technical content across market categories. As a senior managerial position within the Product Management Team, the Commisioning Manager directly manages overall commitment output and ensures that key departmental KPIs are met without compromising on quality.

Achievements:

  • Doubled the Commissioning output of the company from 50 to 100 titles per month.
  • Commissioned over 1400 titles in the year 2014-highest ever commitment output as compared to all other years
  • Redefined commissioning processes and systems to scale commissioning output.
  • Successfully implemented the commissioning of new products such as video titles.
  • Developed a repository of over 200 research documents that formed the knowledgebase for marketing and production teams to develop and promote the titles
  • Successfully led the team of Mumbai Category Managers in developing and managing titles in key areas such as Big Data, Networking and Web Development.

Publishing Selection Manager

Being a strategic and line management role, the Publishing Selection Manager manages the team of Commissioning Selection Executives and also ensures that all approved titles fit within the company's publishing strategy and meet the expected revenue goal. The PSM is expected to increase revenue per title across all selected titles and also contribute to the development of overall publishing strategy.

Achievements:

  • Developed the processes, guidelines and team for publishing selection from scratch
  • Increased average revenue per title across titles from 14K to 16.5K GBP during my tenure
  • Worked with top management team in refining the commissioning strategy to facilitate increased revenue and output

Commissioning Selection Executive

As part of the strategy team at Packt, the Commissioning Selection Executive reviews the proposals submitted by the Acquisition Team at Packt and select the titles that are highly likely to meet the sales target. In addition to selecting the right set of titles and providing feedback to the Acquisition Team on rejected titles, the CSE also contributes to strategic discussions related to title commissioning and product strategy.

Achievements:

  • Prototyped and developed the Commissioning Selection role.
  • Formally defined the commissioning strategy and the reason for rejections for any book idea by taking into account the inputs from top management
  • Developed a framework to determine the quality of ideas and also performance of Acquisition Editors which was fed back to Publishing Managers
  • Promoted to Commissioning Selection Manager level within 6 months

Acquisition Editor, Level 1

Acquisition editor researches market opportunities for new titles, identifies new authors and builds networks. The Acquisition Editor also liaises with authors and reviewers throughout the production process to ensure high quality and on time publication, and provides data to marketing and sales to enable successful sales of the title. The role is a perfect combination of market research, product development and project management. 

Achievements:

  • Involved in commissioning two all-time blockbuster titles for Packt - Mastering AngularJS Web Development(ISBN: 9781782161820) and Unity 3. x Game Development Essentials(ISBN: 9781849691444)
  • Commissioned titles that maintained an average revenue per title of above 18K GBP - well above AE targets and company average.
  • Maintained relationships with all contracted authors and successfully managed projects in development. This was evident from the zero cancellation rate which was maintained for 1.5 years.

Development Editor

Ensure that books are written according to their specification and that the content meets the set standards. The DE gives feedback to authors, recruits and works with reviewers, and works with other staff to ensure that books are developed in accordance with their specification and meet their set deadlines.

Achievements:

  • Managed 24 titles in development simultaneously at the time of resource crunch. The average number of titles managed by a Development Editor is Maintained a clear focus on quality for all assigned titles.
  • The average Amazon review for all titles developed is over 3.5 stars

Technical Editor

The Technical Editor is responsible for checking the technical accuracy as well as the grammar and language aspects of all chapters in an IT book. The Technical Editor looks into the quality of the book in terms of structure, content, tone, audience, pedagogy, mechanics, formatting, consistency, and code. In a nutshell, the Technical Editor functions as both a reader advocate and an author coach.
