Communication Intern

Lake Erie Monsters

I helped write and edit the media guide, set up credentials for media and scouts, I improve the Web site by updating content, adding stories and photos as well as updating the home page poll. I help Doug Plagens (the new team broadcaster) write game notes, edit the game-by-game stats, roster bios and write the game previews and game stories. My daily work consists of adding photos and video to the Web site as well as keeping records of newspaper clippings and stats for each player. In game, I get the stats to players, coaches, media and scouts. I also ran the Time on Ice program. I have also worked with the players multiple times, whether it was for a community relations event or to escort them during media day and other public events. While working with the team I also tried my hand at play by play. I bought a personal recorder and sat in one of the press boxes at the stadium to call the game.

WKYC Channel 3 News

I sat on the assignment desk where I looked for new stories to pop up. I made Police and Fire beat calls to see if there was anything going on. I also sat in with a few of the producers to learn what it takes to produce a half hour show. Along with sitting in with producers I learned anchor techniques from the 7 p.m. news anchors. I regularly went out on stories with reporters learning how to tell a story in video format and include all the elements. When I went out with reporters I was able to interview people for stories as well as work on stand ups and how to use the cameras. A producer came up to me and had me go out on a story. I went out, interviewed the a couple of people and then came back and edited the segment and wrote a script that was later read on the 11 o'clock news.

Niagara Falls High School

I took a class where we had on hand experience with a local radio station using their equipment. We sat in on live radio shows as well as tried are hand on a few mock radio shows and radio spots.
Social Media
Using social media sites like Facebook and Twitter is becoming the norm when it comes to branching out and gaining viewers/listeners. Throughout the years I have been researching and learning about how to utilitize social media for that soul purpose. While interning with the Lake Erie Monsters I would tweet from my personal account updates during the game, as well as give people information on where they could go to listen to the game or get tickets. While there I also learned about a new tool being used called HootSuite. This allows you to check analytics of your social media accounts as well as update them. Another social media site that I have taken interest in is Pinterest. Talking with the Cavs Communication Team, many teams are beginning to use this site. It gives you a chance to get more hits as well as give the fans a chance to interact more.
On Air Talent
I started out in high school as play by play announcer for our high school football, baseball and volleyball games. I was able to talk the Buffalo Sabres Alumni into letting our team at school broadcast their annual Alumni vs. Police hockey game. I also was a regular on a panel of students on a show called "Students Speaking Sports Live." It was a weekly show where we took the idea of ESPN's "Pardon the Interuption" and talked about high school, college and pro sports. In college I edited, produced and talented a minute and a half sports segment for our newscast.
Video Editing Software
I started learning video editing systems in high school when I broadcasted high school sporting events. I originally learned Adobe and then moved to Final Cut Pro. Once I got into college I learned how to you Avid. When I interned at WKYC they were in the final stages of switching over to Edius. I was able to learn along with the reporters how to use the software.
InDesign, Dreamweaver and other Web site design software
While working with others to create a newspaper, I learned on the fly how to use the InDesign software to layout pages for the paper. Throughout  the past few years I have also worked on Web site design and updating them. During my time with the newspaper, I assisted in placing stories on the Web site. At the newstation I worked on placing AP wire stories on the web as well as write a few of them. During my time with the Lake Erie Monsters I updated stats, next game, last game, polls, stories and graphics as well as links.
