Technical Architect

Dell Services

Responsible for setting the technical direction for the Dell Services (Dell) Application Development and Maintenance (ADM) and Infrastructure (IS) organizations that support the Blue Cross Blue Shield of RI (BCBSRI) account engagement. As the primary technical advisor to BCBSRI's IT Leadership team, I bridge the gap between BCBSRI's business strategy and the existing state of BCBSRI's 30-year-old technology. I build the roadmaps to align people, processes, and systems to enable Dell to implement and support emerging enterprise technologies having transformational impact to BCBSRI's bottom-line.

Notable Accomplishments (partial listing)

  • Identified deficiencies in various Dell managers on the BCBSRI account, which prompted the creation of an upward feedback system linked to semi-annual performance appraisals, coupled with a mandatory Leadership Workshop for all managers in Dell Services.
  • Developed an 18-month and 36-month strategic plan for BCBSRI's IT Leadership team, as well as, established the IT Steering Committee.
  • Coordinated a comprehensive audit of the Dell-BCBSRI contract to verify the accuracy of the contract's 270 supported applications in order to project employee support resources.
  • Led Dell IT and BCBSRI IT efforts to remediate security audit failures across BCBSRI's enterprise. Audited BCBSRI's IT security standards and implemented a comprehensive awareness campaign and annual compliance program. Coordinated the Identity Management (IdM) architectural design for the implementation efforts of Courion's Enterprise Provisioning Suite.
  • Responsible for the transition of application support ownership of BCBSRI's legacy system replacement project (BlueTransIT) and new Enterprise Service Bus (ESB), from 3rd-parties to Dell Services ADM. Coordinated resources' effort from various program and project workstreams to stand-up all environments and processes needed for the SDLC of the enterprise rearchitecture effort.
  • Architected Performance Testing strategy, staffing, and environment requirements for comprehensive performance testing competency Center of Excellence leveraging HP LoadRunner for load generation and dynaTrace PurePath for root cause analysis of ESB SOA real-time, high-volume web services. Identified several performance bottlenecks for remediation that improved the average response times from ~12 seconds to ~1.5 seconds, as well as, ensured the web services would be able to scale with increased volume and spike scenarios.
  • Implemented Dell-BCSRI existing 3rd-Party application turnover agreements and drafted new agreement to incorporate extensive knowledge transfer, licensing details, SLA impact audit of existing contractually supported applications, and a staggered support model.
  • Completed comprehensive server/host data gathering effort for remediation of OS and application versions within N-1. Leveraged data to create the first diagram of the entire enterprise environment.
  • Partnered with numerous teams to architect BCBSRI's Data Center move to BCBSRI's newly constructed skyscraper in Providence, RI.

Mike is a "soup to nuts" guy who understands the technology and has the management experience to know what works and what doesn't. Detail-oriented and tenacious, Mike joined our team and helped us achieve real goals in a short time frame. A good team player, and fun to work with.

Joy Russell

Mike represents Dell Services as the Technical Architect for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island. Mike displays the qualities necessary for this role, he works around the clock to find solutions as well as recommending new technologies, cost savings, innovations, training and mentorship to advance resources into new and critical technologies. Mike would be an asset to any organization, not only his knowledge, skills, but his dedication, drive and motivation to bring advanced solutions.

Sam Wholley

Michael is a consummate professional, and one of the most detail-oriented and efficient technical people I know. His approaches to enterprise-level issues ensure quick resolution with scalable solutions. Michael is a team player, and always looks out for team success rether than purely personal victories - a valuable trait.

Christopher Ciotti

I have worked with Mike for two years and have always respected his ability to build and lead a team. Mike has a keen sense for the individual strengths that that mesh well on a project in order to bring it to a successful close while providing maximum value to the client. He provides an unparalleled level of mentorship to those he works with helping them achieve their personal and professional goals. Additionally, his technical ability is first class and he has always been an excellent resource for design, architecture and implementation questions. I will continue to recommend Mike to colleagues and clients alike.

Kerry Bastow

Mike's extensive catalog of technical and managerial skills would be impressive on its own, but it's his drive and determination that make him stand out. Mike came to VCC with a background in Fortune 500 IT management yet consulting to the small & mid size market was completely new to him. Learning the consulting business was a challenge for him, but he persevered and became a great consultant.

Stanley Arend

I was the Director of Finance & Administration supervising Michael for five years. He was a recent graudate with a strong skillset and a fantastic desire to create value for our customers. Together, We built a leading-edge network for an important public policy organization. He is a great guy with a sense of humor and we have stayed in touch since we both moved on to other opportunities.

I worked with Michael on the staples.com website applicaiton. My team supported the databases. Mike was very good at identifying issues and resolving them. His dedication to his team made him well liked by his associates. I enjoyed working with Mike because I knew we could always come to a compromise no matter how difficult the situation. Mikes sense of humor helped the teams through some very rough releases over the years! I would welcome the chance to work with Mike any time.

Tom Blanchard

Although he worked at Flexmind a very short time period, Michael made quite an impact on the company. He was very competent in his job, and a great mentor to those that worked alongside him.

Martin King

My firm, the Gurnet Group, partnered with Michael during his tenure at Staples.com. Michael’s technical expertise and professionalism made him a "preferred client" of Gurnet. I highly endorse him for any employment opportunities or business partnerships.

Ben Peck

I've worked for several managers at Staples, and Mike was the only one who really challenged convention. For 1x1 conversations he would take me outside for a walk through the parking lot. Many times we went offsite for special projects (like framing a team photo for a departing associate). Mike was always thinking several steps ahead, about how we could change processes, tools or workflow to make our our product, work and lives better.
