Beginning with swimming, triathletes are allowed to use any stroke but freestyle is the preferred swim stroke. Participants may wear swim goggles but the floatation devices or swim aids are not permitted. As athletes transition to the bike riding portion of the race—and these rules should be kept in mind for the second transition as well—they must make sure to leave clothes and equipment in the designated areas and do their best to keep out of the way of other athletes. During the first transition specifically, bikes may not be mounted until helmets are securely in place. While riding, athletes are not permitted to draft, though they are able to push, carry, or walk their bikes to the finish line if the bike is damaged. Finally, runners must simply remain upright during the last portion of the triathlon, and walking is accepted.
