System Administrator

CGI Production

(Mostly telecommute but Vancouver is just across the Columbia River from Portland)

One of the big challenges that CGI Production faces is reconciling change across fifteen different servers and five different Linux installations. In addition to the independent servers, they have four main servers that rsync data to and from each other, and five different administrators across the globe all making changes logged in as the “root user.” I have encouraged them to use subversion (a version control system) and some shell scripts to keep track of important files and what has changed.

PHP Developer

FileFront / Ziff Davis Media

(telecommute position)

Filefront.com is a file sharing site; they have 1.5 Million files, over 50 Terabytes of data, hundreds of thousands of unique visitors per day. As a member of the team that kept the systems running, I coded new features, fixed old features, or worked on the communication between the systems. The primary tools of my trade were HTML, CSS, PHP (for both command-line and web scripting ), JavaScript, MySQL, and bash shell.

Senior Programmer

http://www.srsengine.com

Lead Developer for PHP-written OpenSRS interface, supplying our customers ( domain and hosting resellers ) with services to sell- specifically integrating with OpenSRS via their PHP API, among other tasks. This required knowledge of writing modules, rebranding, SOAP and RPC calls over the web to other servers. Also required use of HTML and CSS for the user interface.

Combined datastream from commodity price supplier “live” into website, both via PHP to pull the data and intermingle it with the HTML as our server 'output' the webpage, and via Javascript to have the client computer get the data, parse it and place it into web pages. This is a very early implementation of what we now call AJAX..

These systems were maintenance-heavy and required quite a bit of support when I acquired them, and we were gradually able to move to a more proactive role due to successful optimization.
