Skills

Financial Management

As the treasurer of the Lions Club of Canberra Belconnen in the financial year 2012-2013, I was responsible for the financial management of a community service club with an annual fundraising revenue in excess of $150,000. I took the club from a paper based reporting system to an electronic reporting system based on Excel. This allowed monthly statements to be created quickly and automatically. Our auditor commended me on the move to Excel. I believe this demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and problem solving skills.

Promoting Science Learning

Throughout my career particularly in teaching I have developed strong negotiation and liaison skills. As a teacher at Harrison School, I liaised with 2 teachers from the senior campus to coordinate Harrison School’s first Science Fair. As a member of the Science Educators Association of the ACT (SEA*ACT) I provided other teachers with high quality advice about the requirements of entries into the SEA*ACT Science Fair. The key point being to ensure that students did their own Science investigation and wrote it up as either a poster or a short booklet. We received over 200 entries with several entries going on to represent the school at the state level. I was able to successfully liaise with other teaching staff providing them with quality advice about the prerequisites of a Science Fair entry.

Well-developed Liaison Skills

At MacKillop College, Swan Hill, I taught Science to students from year 7 to year 10. I was a member of the professional learning team that sought to bring the wider community into everyday learning. There were five other teachers in this group. Being in an area strongly focussed on agricultural production, I suggested that we contact the local DPI (Department of Primary Industries) office to develop learning opportunities. The P.E. teacher suggested that we look to local sporting organisations as there was an opportunity of gaining funding from the state government. I clearly articulated my thoughts and ideas whilst listening effectively to the needs of the other members of the group. Initially we went with the P.E. teacher’s suggestion due to immediate access to funding, however, later in the year we invited the Research Officer from DPI to our school. This resulted in a collaborative partnership that saw one of our year 10 students do a summer internship with DPI.

Communication Skills

I have developed highly effective communication skills through my position as a teacher. At Holy Spirit Primary School, I am responsible for teaching all subjects, especially Science. After finding that students were not engaged in learning science, I used effective communication and organisational skills to successfully liaise with Scientists to create engaging learning partnerships for students. In semester 2, 2015, Dr Julie Banfield from ANU presented to students Astronomy. In semester 2, 2015, Mr Glen Nagle from CSIRO Deep Space Station spoke to students via Skype about space research. In term 1, 2016, Dr Michelle Salmon from ANU conversed with students about the ‘’Seismometers in schools’’ program. Establishing these partnerships has required excellent communication skills and strong administrative skills.
