In September 2013, Tonaya accepted a full-time video journalist position at CTV Regina. Previously, Tonaya occupied the position of chase producer at CTV Morning Live in Regina, where she helped produce a three-hour live television news program, while improving her own on-air abilities. As chase producer, Tonaya had to think on her feet and adapt quickly to developing and breaking news, while working with a strong team to create the most-watched morning show in Saskatchewan.In May 2013, Tonaya was approached with the opportunity to create and manage the social media campaign of Explore Regina, a rapidly-growing Regina tourism guide that is expanding its presence online. She enthusiastically tackles this role, and works to make Explore Regina’s social media engaging and informative.Tonaya’s career in broadcast journalism began in January 2012, when she started at CTV Regina as an intern video journalist for the 6 p.m. news. As an intern, she improved her videography, editing and writing skills while working in a fast-paced newsroom. Following the internship, Tonaya was invited to continue working for CTV Regina as a weekend video journalist and web journalist. She also interned at the Regina Leader-Post as a daily news reporter. In this role, Tonaya worked to write multiple stories each day, while completing long-form features for QC Magazine. Tonaya continues to freelance for the Regina Leader-Post.Before entering the journalism program, Tonaya worked as a summer student for two weekly newspapers: The Estevan Mercury and the Southeast Trader Express. She developed her skills in news reporting and editorial writing, and also enjoyed a stint as the papers’ web editor. After completing her second run as a student reporter in August 2011, Tonaya was invited to freelance weekly columns and weekly editorial pieces to the Southeast Trader Express, a position she continued until April 2013.
