Born in Okpoma, Brass, in 1964, Timipre Sylva currently manages the government in Nigeria’s Bayelsa State East Senatorial District. After completing his primary school education at St. Paul’s Anglican Primary School in Okpoma, Timipre Sylva went on to receive a secondary education at Government Secondary School in Twon-Brass. Graduating in 1981, he was accepted into the University of Port Harcourt. There, he earned a degree in English and Linguistics. Timipre Sylva later served the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited in Warri, Delta State, as part of his mandatory National Youth Service Corps obligation.While in Port Harcourt, Mr. Sylva began his career as an Executive Secretary for the National Minority Business Council. In this role, he oversaw the creation of employment opportunities for the citizens of Okpoma. Consequently, Timipre Sylva was elected by his people to represent them at the Rivers State House of Assembly, where he served from 1991 through 1992. His time in this public office was cut short by military intervention in his country. After the ban on politics was rescinded, Mr. Sylva became a Founding Member of the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP). He acted as the Party’s State Financial Secretary.After the elimination of the former five political parties, Timipre Sylva, along with many of his fellow Nigerians, became aligned with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Mr. Sylva assisted the PDP as a Political Advisor to former Governor Diepreye Solomon Peter “DSP” Alamieyeseigha until 2002. He additionally worked as Special Assistant to the Minister of State, Petroleum Resources. Mr. Sylva is married and has three children. His goal is to help the members of his society attain a more comfortable life. In 2008, Mr. Sylva was elected by an overwhelming majority to the position of Governor of Nigeria’s state of Bayelsa.
