Work History

Front-End Engineer

Campaign Monitor
Nov 2014 - Mar 2015

Campaign Monitor is one of the top email campaign managers in the world. With over 120,000 paying customers and 1 Billion emails sent each month. They are also one of Australia most successful start-ups, have secured the largest-ever investment in an Australian technology start-up (270 Million).

As the company's first ever dedicated front-end engineer I help introduce a front-end framework based upon modular components. In a company that has been around for over 10 years it was my role to overcome the challenges around legacy code and how to successfully transition to the new front-end framework. Utilising my background in graphic design I worked closely with the UX and design team to achieve this.

Front-end Engineer

Nov 2012 - Oct 2014

For 2 years I have worked at Bigcommerce, one of the biggest and fastest growing e-commerce platforms in the world. During my time here we've experienced massive growth, doubling our user base, expanding into different countries and multiple rounds of funding totaling $75 Million. It's been a great experience and has helped me grow as an engineer and professional.

The main area that I focused on with Bigcommerce was using my intimate knowledge of front-end technologies HTML and CSS to help scale the front-end. Bigcommerce has been growing at such a fast rate that the old approach to these technologies were limiting our ability to react and scale. I came up with approaches and projects to mitigate these issues with limited resources.

A range of frameworks were used to help achieve our goals including Sass, Less, Foundation, Bootstrap, AngularJS, Grunt and Bower. Some of these overlap but this is because different ones were used in various projects as we moved to find the right stack.

I also worked closely with the design and UX teams to find the perfect balance between flexible design and a consistent front-end. My background in design helped this process.

I also been apart of the hiring and on-boarding of new hires. Extending on this I recently returned from a 3 month stay in our new San Francisco office to help with the on-boarding and knowledge transfer of our new hires.

Front-end Developer

Aug 2012 - Nov 2012

Rokt (or Rocklive as it was known when I was there), is a company that helped businesses monetise their sites and advertisers to reach new audiences. During my time here I helped improve their front-end technology and optimise the processes.

UI Engineer

Aug 2010 - Jun 2012

HotelClub is a world leading global accommodation website offering hotel and accommodation bookings for up to 12 months in advance. Established in 1996, HotelClub provides consumers with over 48,000 accommodation choices in over 5,600 cities worldwide throughout 126 countries.

At HotelClub I worked with a talented, fast moving team to create a wide range of products from full blown hotel booking sites (www.asiahotels.com), to micro-sites, marketing material, banner ads, and even a Wordpress plugin. Here we implemented an OOCSS approach to our front-end development based on Nicole Sullivan's work. This modular approach saved us time, improved efficiency and reduced maintenance.

Creative Web Designer

At the beginning of 2010 I joined the team at Switch IT to help complete some key projects. Work for these brands were split between email campaigns and micro-sites.

Bits and pieces

  • I've had the privilege of speaking at the SydCSS meetup (just a lighting talk but it was great to do anyway!)
  • During my time at Bigcommerce I helped start and run Sydney Web Apps Group meetup group

Buzz Usborne - Director of UX

Tim is an absolute pleasure to work with; hard-working, positive and a great communicator - he fit in with his team right from day one. He’s also a fantastic front-end developer, and was instrumental in helping us grow our front-end architecture by championing scalability and globalisation of components. An important factor for us is the ability to work with legacy code and a mature architecture, which Tim handled with relative ease.

I would have no hesitation in recommending Tim — and have no doubt that he’d bring significant experience and value to any product team.

Rita Marantos - Digital Designer

Tim loves his job and has an extraordinary attention to detail, which leads to a very high quality work. He seeks challenges and is always open to comments and knowledge sharing. It has been a priviledge working with him.

Seth Bell - Head of Engineering

Tim has an excellent understanding of HTML/CSS and combines that with an eye for good UI/UX. He's not afraid of a challenge and takes real pride in his work. A great all rounder with good design skills thrown in!

Tony Puglia - Lead Software Developer

I have worked along side Tim as we worked together to build a new distribution platform for partners for about 5 months before having the privilege to be his Team Leader for the following year. Tim was the UI Engineer in our team. He brought with him a very solid background of User Interface development which software developers take for granted. Tim worked extremely well in a team environment and contributed many ideas to our product. Tim is a valuable asset to any organisation requiring or should be requiring a UI Engineer.

Evan Balafas - CEO

Tim has spent the last 12 months or so working as a web designer for the Excite Media team in Bondi Junction. Tim is very thorough with all his designs and always puts his 100% into his work. Tim has spent alot of time working from SEO projects to building out a hotel and flight reservation back-end and has been a valuable member of the Excite team in Sydney.

Russell Banks - Director of Lined Media

Tim was my direct report in his role of Graphic / Web designer at Excite Digital Media, for almost 12 months. Tim is diligent and hardworking and has excellent creative flare and talent. In addition, Tim exhibits strong project ownership and is a motivated finisher and completer. Tim is an quality graphic designer and web designer, who creates strong sites that scale well, and have excellent HTML and CSS. This is demonstrated by the strong portfolio of sites created by Tim working alone or as part of a design team of two. Tim works well as an individual and as part of a team, and is responsive to the variety of varying deadlines of projects assigned to him. I have enjoyed working with Tim and recommend him and his work while at EDM.

Zoe Sentirmai - Brand Strategist

Tim is a talented graphic designer who applies maturity, passion, and creativity to his tasks. A resourceful team player with a positive attitude, Tim is great at thinking laterally to deliver creative solutions as well as inspired art. It is a pleasure to recommend Tim’s work and work ethic to anyone seeking an up and coming designer for their team or next project.
