t2 Consult is my personal company.  I have undertaken consultancy work for clients ranging in size from SMEs to a big 4 accounting firm, operating in many industries including health, professional services, small-scale manufacturing, consulting and retail.  I've worked closely with the owners of the businesses and greatly enjoyed the opportunity to make a difference to people's lives.

Chief Financial Officer

Network Economics Consulting Group (now Concept Economics)

Network Economics provides micro economic advice to many of Australia’s top 100 companies and top law firms.

  • Mapped and helped implement strategy using Kaplan and Norton methodology to achieve profitable growth.
  • Transformed EBIT from a predicted substantial loss to 30% EBIT.This included doubled sales for 2002 financial year over previous year, then increasing sales by 20% annually to 2004 with a substantial increase in market share.
  • Designed and implemented a profit share scheme that ensured the firm always had capacity to pay within its limits of equity return.  This scheme reduced fixed wage costs, retained all key staff and introduced a culture of greater transparency.
  • Designed and implemented balanced scorecard based monthly reports suite that was distributed to all staff.This helped to ensure all staff remained focused on the financial health of the organisation and how it impacted on the amount distributed to them as profit share.
  • Established in house accounting function - recruited Financial Controller and accounting staff and oversaw its performance to provide best practice accounting support and reduce external service provider costs.
  • Re-engineered all internal financial processes, including installation of new ‘best of breed’ practice management system (ERP) to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Drove a highly successful divestment process of Network Economics Consulting Group businesses raising sale proceeds of six times earnings, considerably over NPV valuation, while still achieving record earnings levels and strong operating cash flow.
  • Brokered and negotiated complex deal requiring reconciliation of contrary Australia/US regulatory issues.Engineered dynamics of the transaction to overcome a near fatal deadlock in sale process.
  • Achieved continued business focus, employee morale and earnings/cash generation despite complex deal.
  • Established boutique private equity company for NECG’sowner.
  • Wrote the business plan, investment strategy, operational plans, and set up the structure.
  • Invested in start-ups and helped manage their growth to profitability.
  • Managed extended group finances including philanthropic ventures.
  • Capital recovery of any non performing assets.
  • Reviewed investment proposals and business plans.
  • Media management and interviews.
  • Provided support and caching to portfolio company management
  • Negotiated deals.
  • Between February and May 2008, I negotiated the repurchase of the assets of the firm at a significantly reduced price when the American based parent wanted to exit the local market to focus on US operations.
  • I established a new entity to acquire the assets of the American operations including selecting and installation of new practice management software (ERP) and assisting the Financial Controller and HR Manager establish all the new entity’s operational policies, procedures and infrastructure.

Objectif Limited (ASX listed)

Objectif was a listed IT company that dramatically increased its market cap during the tech-wreck.  I was employed to clean up the books and systems, and provide better management reports to the Board, ASX and shareholders.  I resigned once this had been done and helped employ a replacement CFO before I left.

Chief Financial Officer

Australian Payments Clearing Association

Australian Payments Clearing Association is a key banking industry body, established in 1992 to co-ordinate the implementation and operation of payments systems and electronic banking in Australia.

I was employed at start-up, reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, and responsible for accounting, treasury, administration and information technology.

Accounting & Finance

  • Development and maintenance of accounting, internal control and taxation policies
  • Installation and maintenance of general ledger and costing systems (Sun Micro Systems)

  • Co-ordination of external audit and extended audit testing

Information Technology

  • In 1995, in the early days of the internet, I personally sketched the architecture, and sold to a conservative Board, a Lotus Notes-based core process workflow management system. The $100,000 system automated the compilation and distribution of bulky agendas, working papers and minutes for over fifty committees and working groups and distributed them over numerous proprietary systems. It saved the organisation having to employ at least five additional administration staff and substantially reduced distribution costs. It's still in use today

1988 - 1993

Financial Controller

Terrace Tower Group

Terrace Tower is a group of property and investment companies with net assets in excess of $600 million.  The group was wholly owned by John Saunders (now deceased), former Joint Managing Director and co-founder of Westfield. The Shore Inn was a 162-room four-star hotel with two restaurants and nine conference rooms. It employed 110 people and had a turnover of $10M.  In September 1989 I was transferred from Head Office to solve what had become a major problem for the group. Reporting to the Group Financial Controller (at head office), and working with five different Hotel General Managers in three years, I was responsible for the entire finance and accounting function and information technology.

Responsibilities and key achievements - Hotel

  • Installation of new front of house IT systems saving $100,000 per year in IT costs and improving guest service levels and reporting
  • Installation of new general ledger (Solution 6) and payroll system (Pay-Pack)
  • Supervision of accounting staff - AP, AR, payroll and purchasing
  • Management reporting (substantial use of dBase programming)
  • Statutory reporting
