My name is Katherine (Katie) Thomas and I am a senior at Longwood University. I am pursuing a degree in Communication Studies with a concentration in Organizational Communication and Public Relations and will be graduating in May 2012. I am currently seeking an entry level job in the area of communications and public relations that will allow me to utilize my oral and written communication skills as well as my event planning skills. However, I do have other communication skills such as conducting organizational communication audits and crisis communication. As a student at Longwood University I have been very involved on campus through organizations and volunteer work. I was able to be a part of two Greek organizations and also serve as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Through these organizations I gained experience working with a diverse group of individuals, planning and conducting events, and developing strong networking skills. I have also completed an internship that prepared me for the responsibilities that come with a career, as well as the knowledge and ability to perform tasks such as press releases, PSA's, and conducting progress analysis's of events.

In exploring potential career opportunities I have found that I am very drawn to working with people and being in a leadership position.
Positions that have particularly interested me are those of event planning, employee relations/human resources, and recruiting. I feel that my experience with event planning in my organization has qualified me in applying for entry level positions and also the drive to strengthen my knowledge in this area. Recruiting positions are also a potential career for myself because I have been through many sorority recruitment's that involve meeting a variety of individuals and positively representing my organization. Along with this experience I have taken courses involving effective communication and persuasion strategies and tactics. Employee relations/human resources is a job that I would apply for due to the nature of the work and working with people. In this position I would be able to use my skills of organizational communication and conflict resolution.
My objective is to obtain a position in the area of communications and public relations in order to utilize oral and written communication skills, as well as event planning and organizational skills.

As an Intern I created and distributed Press Releases and PSA's to radio stations and newspapers for our client's event. One of the clients that I did the majority of my work for was the Disabled American Veteran (DAV) Flight Team. They had several shows in various cities while I was interning, and I completed media list's and contact information for each show. I also assisted in tracking the success rate of the air show's through a progress analysis.

In my position as Guest Relations at Divinity Spa I was expected to first demonstrate the company's mission on a daily basis which was to make guests feel relaxed and at ease while in the spa. This customer service was a vital part of my job as well as, recording the guest's information into the database and scheduling appointments.
