Waste Plastic conversion to Commercial Fuel *
Waste plastic disposal and excessive use of fossil fuels are causing environmental concerns in the world. The utilisation of plastic is increasing exponentially due to its light weight and non corrosive nature. The ban on plastics isn’t practical solution as it compromises human convenience. Taking into consideration, the chemical structure of plastic (petroleum polymer), we thought of a reverse possibility of breaking the long polymer chain to lighter hydrocarbon fuels, in an inert atmosphere, by the process of Thermal Depolymerisation at high temperatures in an economically feasible manner. The intention behind our project was to convert less valued but highly generated waste to a valuable hydrocarbon fuel.
Grey Water and Bio-electricity using Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC)
Water is the most pivotal necessity for all forms of life. Unfortunately, rapid industrialisation, inadequate availability rate and the increasing consumption rate is deteriorating the quality and quantity of this resource. Grey water refers to the runoff from sinks, showers, etc excluding sewage and toilets. My project focused on recycling of grey water with proper treatment for better benefits. The water from the kitchen sinks and showers goes into a chlorination filter and then into a holding tank where it can be pumped into flush tanks. This water which gets flushed off happens to be replenished with nitrogen and phosphorous (from faecal matters and other waste products) and can be further treated and utilised for irrigation purposes. Furthermore, the water from the flush tanks can be treated and used for power generation via the construction of microbiobial fuel cells (MFC).
