Head Gardener "The Holme"

ISS Waterers

Recently employed as Head Gardener for The Holme at Regents Park, London. The Holme is a listed building and includes many historically significant features in the gardens.

I had a work force of 3 permanent staff and 1 to 2 temporary through out the year. Responsibilties include a formal garden, perennial gardens and lawns, working closely with the House Manager, Landscape Consultant & ISS' District Manager.

I also decided which annuals are planted for summer and winter flowering, designing the layouts for the formal flower beds.

  • Responsible for purchasing of plant for the spring season, liasing with the Garden Centre owner.  Experienced in wide range of suppliers and growers.
  • Manage team of plantarea assistants to include training as required and ensure staff have clear directions to understand any new task they are required to carry out.  Plan to ensure tasks are covered with available resources.
  • Responsible for quality control, maintenance and care of plants with regular inspections for disease and pest control.
  • Design and supervise layout of plant displays, utilising sundries from other departments as appropriate to achieve increase of sales in all areas.

  • Liaised with customers in shop and in telephone calls, to respond to all enquiries.
  • Assisted with redesign of plantarea layout. Set up seasonal displays, such as herbal and alpine areas, producing an overall increase in herb sales.
  • Introduced new ideas for mixed container displays.
  • Re-designed display of stoneware to develop easier customer and sales access.

  • Responsible for stock maintenance, buying and care.  This covered all areas of stock management from plants to garden supplies.
  • Management, training and development of new staff.
  • Sole responsibility for producing and sending out email Newsletter, including maintaining the address database.
  • Redesigned plant area to give maximum display of herbs, annuals, perennials and vegetables.  Maintained 5,000 sq ft of plant display area for shrubs, small trees and other perennials.  Redesigned small shop layout to give more display space and make products more accessible to customers.
  • Designed and stencilled artwork decoration to shop.
  • From my first year in 1999, sales increased from a deficit over the year before to arrive at a gross profit upturn of over 250% just prior to Sept 2001 - a recovery period of just over 2 years.  Even with the downturn of the economy following Sept 11 2001, the year ended at a 240% recovery since I held the position to that time.

Responsibilities included interviewing prospective employees.  Raising bedding and vegetable crops for spring sales and growing 8,000+ poinsettias from plugs to finished plants in time for the holiday season in a 4,000 sq ft propagation greenhouse.  Maintaining ever-changing displays in a 3,200 sg ft display greenhouse.

Theatre Arts - Stage Manager, House Manager, Volunteer Co-ordinator for The Stage Centre and Theater Downtown Orlando.

I was responsible for the co-ordination of 300 plus volunteers to work events at The Stage Centre, often with several events occurring the same day or same time. As house manager I also made sure the audience was seated and comfortable before each event.

Numerous performances in Amateur Dramatic productions.

Appearance as an extra in a tv mini series.

Cycling - I have toured the UK as well as parts of the USA.
