James A. Terrance, Jr. leads the congregation of the Friendship Baptist Church in Kansas City, Missouri. A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, James A. Terrance, Jr. attended Southern University, a historically black college located in his hometown. He graduated with a BS in Liberal Studies and entered the Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Shawnee, Kansas. At Friendship Baptist, he leads a thriving community by means of his preaching, teaching, and organizational skills. James A. Terrance, Jr. and the people of Friendship Baptist practice Christian hospitality by welcoming anyone who enters their church and reaching out to the people around them who are struggling with divorce, poverty, and addiction. The church's Divorce Care ministry helps men and women recover from the spiritual pain, emotional trauma, and financial setbacks that can occur in the wake of a divorce. In the summer, Friendship Baptist Church hosts the Children's Defense Fund Friendship Freedom School. The summer enrichment program helps encourage a love of reading and education in young people and their families. Finally, the church runs the Hope Ministry, a social services program that includes a food pantry, assistance with utility bills and housing, medical care, and access to counseling. Due to his work at Friendship Baptist and in the larger community, the Kansas City Globe recognized James A. Terrance, Jr. as one of the 100 Most Influential African Americans. In addition to his duties at Friendship Baptist, Terrance also writes a weekly newspaper column. He serves on the board of the Black Health Care Coalition and maintains membership in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Urban League of Greater Kansas City, and in numerous Baptist organizations. James A. Terrance, Jr. is married and has two sons.
