Engnieering Lead - Mechanical, Piping & Materials

In January 2010, ExxonMobil Iraq Limited (EMIL), an affiliate of Exxon Mobil Corporation, signed an agreement with the South Oil Company of the Iraq Ministry of Oil to rehabilitate and redevelop the West Qurna I field in southern Iraq.

  • PMC responsibility for leading the FEED and detailed mechanical, piping and material design of four 5000m3 Crude storage tank farm, Degassing drums, centrifugal pumps, associated piping with interfaces and tie-ins.
  • In addition, I am also responsible for leading the detailed mechanical, piping and materials design of Desalter module addition to wet crude train project. It comprises of crude economizer, balance vessel, desalter, dehydrator, coalescer, Flare knock out drum, centrifugal pumps, associated piping with interfaces and tie-ins.

Some 20 million cubic meters per day are currently being flared in the South of Iraq. This represents 170,000 barrels of oil equivalent each day (boe/d) of raw gas.

BGC has a phased-approach to the project: rehabilitation, rejuvenation and expansion.

  • Reports to Shell Engineering and Business Development Manager. Fifteen–– (15) direct reports from EPC consultants and two (2) reports from within Shell.  Accountable for mechanical and piping teams for project implementation, engineering, material integrity checks, construction, commissioning and support.
  • Responsible for the mechanical related Scope Definition Report, FEED, Procurement, Construction, Commissioning, Start-up and Hand over of the USD 27 Billion “Rehabilitation of South Gas Oil & Gas Facilities” in Basra, Iraq following Shell DEP and HSSE requirements. This project is the largest effort in Iraq’s history to minimize the “Flaring” and hence improving health, safety and environment in Iraq.
  • Responsible to guide, manage, supervise and control the mechanical related work from two EPC consultants (Technip and Worley Parsons).
  • Following Shell Risk based Inspection (RBI-S) process, to establish mechanical Integrity of oil and gas gathering flow lines and manifolds, separation, storage, pumping facilities, offshore loading facilities, piping and pipeline systems, mechanical packages, water and gas injection facilities, utilities including STPs, water treatment, fire fighting, air compression, HVAC etc.
  • Participation in progressive design reviews, HAZOP, HAZID workshops to ensure that Shell DEPs, DEM1 and DEM2 compliance is being followed.

  • Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the 27 billion dollars Khalifa Sea-Port and Industrial Zone (KPIZ) infrastructure project in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
  • Responsibilities include development of scheme, preliminary and final design of Infrastructure Utilities pipeline corridors like sea water cooling system, fire protection, potable water, process water, combined waste water (sewerage plus drainage), ground water and storm water system, etc.

Reporting to the Senior Manager-Plant Design, I managed a team of 3-4 professional mechanical engineers.

  • Provide expert advice, guidance and technical support on pressure vessels, piping, control valves, static and rotating equipment, cooling system, pumping stations, Mechanical engineering support of domestic project development and operations to ensure facilities are cost effective to design, construct and safe and efficient to operate.
  • Preparation of Engineer Design Modification and Retrofit packages for piping modifications, equipment replacement and/or modifications.
  • Preparation of design specifications, design requirements, design manual and design plans.
  • Prepared & reviewed flow-sheets, piping and isometric drawings for the design modification.
  • Ensured that the design information meets the standards, codes and licensing requirements of the regulatory bodies.

  • As mechanical, piping and valve specialist in 530 MWe Unit-4 plant design department, I prepared over 130 design modification, piping retrofit and equipment replacement packages as part of the re-licensing of 530 MWe Unit-4. These projects were ranging from several thousand to several millions dollars.
