Business Analyst/SME – Integrated Vehicle Management System (IVMS)

TATA MOTORS LIMITED (TML) Having annual revenue in excess of $40 billion, TML is India's largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, with installed capacity to produce over 50,000 cars/month.

IVMS was conceived to integrate legacy vehicle management systems being used at manufacturing plants of TML across India and to support TML’s market share growth targets. In order to enable TML to deliver on its production strategy, the key KPI’s constituted for the IT platform were to increase productivity of plants by 15% and reduce inventory management costs by up to 20%.

  • Engaged in the entire life-cycle of product implementation (from data capture to solution delivery)

There was a huge cost pressure in Indian automobile industry owing to a global slowdown. To add, the tax breaks to the automobile sector were expiring soon and there was a need for automobile companies to reduce costs & find new ways of generating revenues. I led a study under plant head’s leadership to examine potential cost saving techniques to keep plant afloat.

  • Built models in SPSS in the area of classification, segmentation  to industry standards (CRISP) for informed decision-making
  • Submitted a proposal at the end of study that recommended a 3-point strategy to maintain plant operations profitable
    • Phase-out non-profitable product line(s) with an annualized cost saving of $6.5 mn
    • Leaner & meaner processes across operations by eliminating non-value adding components

Engineer - Operations

Part of the operations team that worked on the manufacturing shop-floor and managed day to day operations around inventory, manufacturing and supply chain ranging from raw material to a finished product. I had the opportunity to work across various shop-floors & phases of production, which provided me an invaluable exposure to the entire automobile manufacturing facility.

  • Evaluated existing inventory management system, analyzed inventory fall-out rates and drafted a set of SOP (Standards Operating Procedures) to ensure quality control & reduce rejection by 20%
  • Part of a strategic sourcing team to deal with vendors, to ensure efficient planning & supply chain management of ancillaries sourced from external vendors – proposed effective forward/backward integration techniques to reduce dependence on vendors for critical components
