SAKTI (Search for Action and Knowledge for Tribal Initiative) is an organization that has been working to protect the forests and the rights of tribal people in Andhra Pradesh. SAKTI literally translates into `power' and SAKTI's motto is to empower tribal communities by rejuvenating their own knowledge and making them draw inspiration from their own culture and literature.

Work at SAKTI gave me an oppurtunity to study a variety of literary works including texts of inscriptions and older compilations of indigenous knowledge. I worked with a lot of involvement on a variety of topics like Agricultural proverbs,  Rain indicators, Disaster preparedness, Water vocabulary, Biodiversity and Tribal lore.

Contract assignment of three months each for three times.

Worked remotely from India. Full text publications on CD-ROM and hardcopies of newsletters were sent by courier and cataloging information was submitted in excel sheets, along with abstracts and index terms.

AGROVOC Classifier


Worked for FAO's AGROVOC Concept Server development. The task was to revise and refine the AGROVOC terms (about 40,000) into proper concept hierarchies and assign appropriate semantic relations. Besides researching on each of the concepts and terms, the work involved co-ordinating a small team of co-workers, and posting issues & events on a blog.

Indexed on-line content modules of VASAT (Virtual Academy for the Semi-Arid Tropics).

Conducted Video conference sessions with rural farmers, particularly women farmers, based on the content of the learning modules. Adopted novel formats of knowledge sharing  to sustain interest and secure participation.

Translated the AGROVOC thesaurus into Telugu language for indexing the content developed in local language by local communities.

Examination of index terms provided by CGIAR Centers for their possible inclusion into AGROVOC thesaurus: About 4,000 terms from 9 CGIAR (Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research) centres were analyzed. This study was funded by IWMI and carried out from India.
