In early 2011, attorney Steven M. Ziegler joined the management team at SantaFe HealthCare, Inc., as its Senior Vice President, Chief Compliance Officer, and General Counsel. Based out of Sunrise, Florida, Mr. Ziegler functions in many roles for the parent company of Haven Hospice, SantaFe Senior Living, and AvMed. While Haven Hospice and SantaFe Senior Living operate as a hospice and as a 4-location retirement community, respectively, AvMed serves as a local health plan provider responsible for more than 300,000 people. Steven M. Ziegler remains abreast of a multitude of state and federal regulations. Some of his duties include litigating cases, overseeing all claims and lawsuits affecting the company, and checking that SantaFe HealthCare and its subsidiaries meet risk assurance requirements. Contracts represent another important issue for Mr. Ziegler, who approves every vendor contract and ensures that both parties meet their obligations. Along with conducting internal audits, Steven M. Ziegler interacts with the SantaFe Healthcare Board of Directors to report on legal developments and his discoveries about the company's operations. Furthermore, he chairs the SantaFe HealthCare Corporate Compliance Committee and the AvMed Risk and Security Oversight Committee. Additionally, Mr. Ziegler remains involved in legislative activities that could influence the health care field by drafting favorable legislation, reviewing possible new laws, and engaging lawmakers as a representative of his employer. Prior to joining SantaFe HealthCare, Steven M. Ziegler spent nearly 30 years as the owner of his own firm in Hollywood, Florida. While there, he assisted managed care organizations throughout the country and earned recognition as a pioneer in this practice area. A graduate of the University of Miami School of Law, Mr. Ziegler aided the Florida legislature in rewriting its medical malpractice law in 2003 to limit vicarious liability claims against health care providers.
