Stephen Walls

The desire to further establish a career in Construction Engineering is driven by longstanding interest in the balance of how a structure, or system, both looks and performs. The most exceptional projects balance aesthetic quality with impactful function as innovative solutions are increasingly required to combat growing human demand from diminishing natural resources. The Built Environment today allows the most diverse, challenging and fulfilling opportunities for those involved.

Skills & Competencies

Communication Skills

Developed via employment, sporting and travel history. Comfortable negotiating with and motivating others, across all levels. Conveying my thoughts and listening to the advice of colleagues.

Teamwork

Collaborating with internal departments as PM/QS, along with external trades/contractors  to meet project deliverables on time and within budget. I believe Rugby to be the epitome of teamwork in Sport.

Problem-solving

Analytical by nature and able to gain a grasp of my surroundings and the people within quickly. Determine process/procedure by observation or asking questions to identify improvement opportutnities or alternative solutions.

Organisation/Time-Management

Previous self-directed studies have demanded strict planning, SMART goal-setting and self-motivation and evaluation, improving my prioritisation and quality standards of work and other commitments. These skills have allowed me to manage an increasing work load with further day-release study, along with sporting/social obligations.

Computer Literacy

Experience in AutoCad through Draughtsman role. Current studies have involved the use of presentation programmes, research libraries and document producing suites. QS role involves ConQuest (estimating software) and Excel. Recent study included AutoCAD and Revit, which I intend to further increase competency of as the industry evolves toward BIM compliance.

Occupational Health & Safety

With increased management responsibility and on-site presence developing, a Temporary Works Supervisor course was completed, along with a general Health & Safety accreditation. Each providing understanding of hazardous situations and best practice in mitigating risk.

Business & Management (Double Diploma)

Australian Institute of Commerce & Technology (AICT), Perth, WA

Funded myself through self-directed, distance learning to develop professional competence and knowledge. Primarily gaining qualification in Business and Management whilst considerably developing many personal skills. The nature of the study required efficient time management, SMART goal setting, independent research and communication with overseas tutors and administrators.

Other Roles, Achievements & Experiences

At the time of joining my most recent company the commercial department identified certain contractors and schemes which would drive the business forward. We opened up two of these highlighted business streams and I was heavily involved with communictions and efforts resulting in the awarding of contracts which has, and will continue to generate repeat business and diversify the company's working profile. In this role I have also had the opportunity to attend educational institutions and give talks highlighting the opportunities for young people in the Built world.

Rugby has played an important part in the development of my character. The fundamental values of respect, integrity and fair-play are directly transferable to the working environment. Coaching junior teams in the UK and during my time playing in Australia, allowed the development of many skills, particularly planning, monitoring and communication. Formally gaining both RFU and ARU coaching accreditation via course attendance and practical examination. Most recently, I was fortunate enough to captain Consett RFC First XV to their most successful league position last year (2016-2017), in a year which also saw our Junior section grow hugely and a new clubhouse facility built on-site, representing strong, holistic improvement.

Overseas travel has also influenced my path and desire to establish a career in The Built Environment. These experiences are classed as personal achievement as it is at these times that I have learned most about myself, others and the infrastructure issues of areas visited.
