About

The library is a sanctuary of knowledge, and Ms. Sonia Gavins, School Library Media Specialist for the Atlanta Area Schools, has always felt at home among great works of literature. Ms. Gavins has been credited for designing lessons based on the American Association of School Librarians Standards for the 21st Century Learner. She has always been happy to share her extensive skills at doing advanced research and writing to further help students become critical thinkers and happy patrons of library resources. With the advancement of technology, Ms. Gavins aims to use its best available components in order to ensure the propagation of a vast reservoir of knowledge via the web for the good of everyone. She is all for helping children, teens and adults become more informed library users. Her design and creation of a summer reading program have inspired people to become enlightened readers, and children and teens to become adept users of their language and literacy skills.

Prior to working as School Library Media Specialist, Ms. Sonia Gavins was Special Educator for the Decatur Area Schools from August 1998 until May 2009. During her stint as such, Sonia wrote Individualized Education Program Plans (IEPs) and attended IEP meetings. With IEPs in place, Sonia has been able to help parents, students, general and special educators at making vital decisions on education specially focused on students with disabilities. Ms. Gavins utilized small groups and differentiated instruction to meet her students’ individual needs. Recognizing the uniqueness of each of her students was her utmost consideration, and thankfully, Ms.Gavins has proven herself to be a sincerely helpful special educator. She was tasked to conduct progress monitoring in order to assess her students’ academic performance. In so doing, Ms. Gavins was instrumental at ensuring consistency and attainment of individual goals for those placed under her care.
