Skills

Skills

Article Publishing

I spent two years as a sections editor for the University of South Alabama news publication, 'The Vanguard.' I have also published articles for Mobile's local new publication 'The Lagniappe,' research magazine, 'NCURA', and for the premier issue of 'NORDP.'*   *NCURA and NORDP are both research-based administrative publication.

Technical Editing

I have edited grants, academic papers, and papers that have been published in professional magazines.  I edit for grammar and English skills as well as compliance and comprehension.

Summary

Having taught technical writing and English composition, and having been a technical editor, I can say with confidence that the skill of writing has declined in the education system. Far too many individuals arrive at the college and professional levels without having had proper training to be considered competent writers.  Based on my experience as a grant writer (mostly working with federally funded projects), I see that the national pedagogical focus is almost limited to STEM (vitally important, of course) skills; however, this does not mean that the priority of English and writing should fall exclusively from the radar, as, from my experience, it has.  That said, my goal as a future Instructional Design and Development professional is to develop curriculum materials for primary and secondary education that will prepare individuals to not only write competently in higher education but also in professional capacities.  With the advent of the Internet and the increase of computer-based communication, it is critical that we do justice to students in the free education system.
