Benjamin Franklin stated, "If a man empties his purse into his head, no one can take it from him. An investment in knowledge always pays the highest return”.  Earning a Doctorate of Nurse Practitioner provides a level of satisfaction and security through accomplishment and opportunity; satisfaction in the ability to serve others, and security through an achievement that cannot be seized or challenge by another’s ill intent or envy. In October of 2004, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) deliberated and concluded the complexity of the nation’s healthcare system merited a change in standard. The AACN, by the year 2015, will require all advance care nurses to earn a degree at the doctoral level.  The American Association of Nurse Anesthetist (AANA) followed suit and stated, by 2025 all Nurse Anesthetist graduates must earn a doctorate.

In pursuit of personal goals and professional requirements, the decision was made to complete the Doctorate of Nurse Practitioner program at the University of Alabama.  The DNP degree is a substantial academic achievement and will offer the opportunity to seek placement as a Professor of Anesthesia.  The nations aging population and demands on the healthcare system have created an anesthesia personnel shortage.  The average age of the current CRNA is 48.5 years.  Inclusive of the personal and professional benefits, is the desire to train new CRNAs and have a positive impact on the students, and the patients for which they care.
