Fidelity India was acquired by L&T Finance Holdings in November 2012. I am a part of Group Corporate Communications team that handles the PR, media and investment related communications across group companies - L&T Finance, L&T Infrastructure, L&T Investment Management, L&T Insurance and L&T Capital. I handle Investment Communications for L&T Investment Management wherein I write and deliver strategic thought leadership materials on investment and financial industry topics on behalf of the CEO for various publications and industry bodies.

 

Responsibilities under Investment Communications:

  • Author leadership / thought pieces on behalf of the CEO for newspapers as well as forums such as CII, FICCI etc. A few examples include (a) India’s inclusion in global bond indices government bonds in Global Bond Indices can be a catalyst for domestic debt markets (b) How to get Indian economy on the growth track etc
  • Proactively write investment research pieces on behalf of the portfolio managers for investment and educational pieces to be distributed externally.
  • Periodically write investment articles (global and local market outlook, market analysis, policy announcement and budget analysis, key investing themes, volatility and investor education communication etc.) to create investor interest and strengthen the company’s brand.
  • Respond to press requests for interviews, quotes and articles on funds and markets on behalf of head of business and investments
  • Work closely with the portfolio managers and sales/marketing team to communicate product offerings, portfolio positioning and current market environment to each distribution channel. Products covered include Indian equity and fixed income funds.
  • Represent / support the investment team in engagements with clients.

 

Responsibilities under Group Corporate Communications:

  • Develop and execute communications strategies and initiatives to support the organisation. These include internal communications including employee newsletters and media relations
  • Develop corporate issues messaging and positioning strategies
  • Drive positive coverage across a broad range of media
  • Respond to and route incoming media requests
  • Organize press briefings, media sessions, and events
  • Responsible for the Group’s internal newsletter which is devised to keep the employees informed about the company’s efforts and plans on various businesses

In this role, I was responsible for developing and executing effective content and communications including product offerings, portfolio positioning, white papers, perspectives, interviews and presentations. I acted as an interface for sales and distribution and the portfolio managers with a special focus on macroeconomic and markets themes.

 

  • Product analysis and research encompassing funds across the mutual fund spectrum in India
  • Primary interface between Portfolio Managers and the sales teams with the responsibility of ensuring effective communication from the portfolio managers to the sales team. This is achieved by making presentations and customized write-ups articulating the views of the managers and the Head of Investments.
  • Proactive dissemination of information on the performance of in-house fund products to the sales team and the distribution channels.
  • Organize road shows, events and compiling product literature to be disseminated to institutional clients and the investor community.

The product management team worked closely with the portfolio managers and sales/marketing team to communicate product offerings, portfolio positioning and current market environment to each distribution channel. Products covered include sterling retail and institutional, euro retail and institutional and global bond & cash funds, global equities (including sector funds) and Asian equities.

  • Analysed performance of Fidelity’s entire range of fixed income funds (by doing portfolio performance, positioning and trading activity) across a range of time periods
  • Produced market reviews and outlook pieces over various time periods (regions include: UK, US, Japan, and Europe)
  • Provided clients, prospects, consultants and internal training events with updates on the investment philosophy and insight on the investment process, performance and portfolio positioning
  • Prepared presentations on markets and       Fidelity funds for institutional clients, roadshows, investor day
  • Produced adhoc fund and market updates based on current themes (for instance, articles on volatility and future of banks following the subprime crisis, educational piece on asset backed securities, etc and fund perspectives)

OTHER INITIATIVES WITHIN FIDELITY INTERNATIONAL

  • Worked as part of the core team at Fidelity, during the acquisition of its Indian mutual fund business, to ensure a smooth and successful transition for employees and investors of both Fidelity and L&T Mutual Fund
  • Won the best peer award within product management. This award was a recognition of imparting training on asset classes to associates in the team
  • Participated in Beat the Street, an in-house portfolio management program and was part of the winning team. In this program, five teams were responsible for managing a hypothetical portfolio consisting of 10 scrips over 6 months with a limited window period of 3 buys and sells over the period
  • Regularly train customer services and technology teams in Gurgaon, India on fixed income as an asset class

Worked in a team of ten on various bespoke projects for senior management in the Institutional Equities division. A sample of the projects worked on: 

  • Global Client Feedback Program: Analysed results from a client feedback program run across 1000+ clients in different business verticals for global business heads who used the analysis to incorporate client feedback in their business plans. A summary was presented to the Board of Directors in New York.
  • Published surveys: Analyzed renowned survey publications such as Greenwich to identify strengths and improvement areas.
  • Unbundling: Worked on viable options of commission sharing agreements that equity bosses could offer to clients when FSA made it mandatory to implement unbundling in the UK. This involved qualitative as well as quantitative assessment of resources already allocated.
  • Best Ideas: Initiated the Best Ideas Project for the trading floor. This project measured the performance of the traders vis a vis the stock calls suggested to the clients and the profitability to the firm thereof
