Passionate About Helping Students Love Learning

I am very passionate about helping every one of my students love learning. I use a variety of strategies to build a supportive and cohesive classroom community among my students. I love to integrate STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) into classroom lessons, especially literacy activities as we build our writing, reading, and oral communication skills. I love integrating arts and technology into classroom lessons, and design integrated, multi-disciplinary projects which engage students in active learning. I encourage and support my students to be self-directed learners, and use "passion projects" to help students cultivate their own interests as well as literacy skill within our curriculum. I help my students build digital portfolios with examples of their work, and their growing language fluency, to connect with parents and benchmark student growth in different areas throughout the year.

I have always been a teacher. I've taught for 16 years as a public school classroom teacher  in 1st, 3rd, 3rd/4th, 4th/5th, and 5th grades, and taught as a K-6 math specialist. For 14 years I worked with preschool-age children as a teacher, facilitator, teacher trainer, and curriculum specialist in church ministry.

Service to Special Populations

From 2013 to present I have served as a classroom teacher at Positive Tomorrows, Oklahoma's only school exclusively serving homeless students and their families. One of my strengths is empathy and building relationships with different people from a wide variety of backgrounds and contexts. In 2010-2013 I was actively involved with several urban ministries serving low income families and children. I helped organize and maintain several projects in a local, low-income apartment complex in Edmond. These projects included after-school tutoring, backyard Bible Club, monthly parties, monthly food bank (Project 66) transportation and childcare. Additionally I helped organize and staff weekly hot dog suppers and children's activities in summer months with the purpose of building community relationships between families. As a result of this project work and these relationships, I was able to get to know, employ, and mentor several women from the apartment complex as part-time child care staff. This opened the door to opportunities for job training and subsequent career advancement for several of these women, who have moved on to full-time employment as childcare staff in other organizations.   In 2013 I had the opportunity to mentor a young mother of four in the Bridge to Life (BTL) program at the Oklahoma City City Rescue Mission. Through that experience I started a weekly class for preschoolers at the City Rescue Mission, and helped organize a summer sports camp in 2013 at the Mission. Redeeming the Family (RDF) is another recent project and outreach ministry I have volunteereed with. Redeeming the Family supports the children of incarcerated parents in Oklahoma by providing books and recorded video messages to reconnect or maintain their relationships.

Other Gifts and Skills

My gifts include leadership, teaching, curriculum writing, event planning, interpersonal relationships, organization, staff supervision, training and singing with children. I am a very collaborative person, and enjoy working with as well as leading teams. I work well with volunteers as well as professional staff members.
