Programmer/Web Communications Specialist

Northwestern University

Skills Used: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, XML/XSLT, Velocity, WordPress, Cascade Role

Overview: Approximately 75% of this job’s duties involve CMS administration within Cascade as we migrate 65 websites to our new template. Originally employed due to my expertise with this specific CMS setup in addition to front-end experience. Translated layered Photoshop mock-ups to HTML/CSS. A portion of this position involves creating add-ons by request using JavaScript/jQuery or PHP within the WordPress platform. The remaining duties include training, support, usability testing, and project management.

Interesting Challenges: The English department’s people section within Cascade uses information from the data definition in at least 5 different areas. I ensured the content is easy for the user to enter/maintain and the flow of said information is easily understood by web visitors with minimal lag within the system. Due to the limitations of XSLT, I learned how to code in Velocity for the Economics department’s website. XSLT does not allow one to change variables where Velocity does. Learning Velocity on the fly allowed me to implement a more visually pleasing events listing.

User Support Specialist

Northwestern University

Skills Used : HTML, CSS, XML/XSLT, Cascade

Role Overview: Assisted with post-launch HTML/CSS requests and modifications. Programmed smaller sites into the CMS using XML/XSLT.

Trained and assisted content editors with their websites. Expertise in troubleshooting was vital to this role. I conducted usability testing and QA testing before every launch.

Interesting Challenges: Hannon Hill’s Cascade was adopted within the first few months I was hired. I had the unique opportunity to learn CMS administration and XSLT alongside the developers while we prepared to migrate existing websites from the legacy system. During my time in this position, we launched over 80 websites, and I personally acted as project lead on 20 of them.

Our team also redesigned an event management system from the ground up. My role was to spot potential usability issues as well as devise test cases for the newly coded software.

Project Manager/Customer Training and Support Manager

Imaginary Landscape

Skills Used: Subversion, HTML, CSS

Role Overview: Translated mock-ups into HTML and CSS for the smaller websites. Held meetings to determine project goals according to the client’s needs. Ensured products were delivered within the time frame and within budget. Acted as a liaison between clients, developers, and designers. Managed the support department and conducted on-site trainings.

Interesting Challenges: Clients from the restaurant industry often had difficulty verbalizing exactly what look and feel they desired. A sales associate and I began creating more robust wireframes in order to help these clients with the decision-making process.
