The Met Sacramento

The Met Sacramento is an innovative public high school designed and founded by the educational nonprofit The Big Picture Company. The Met is a state-funded school located in downtown Sacramento, California. After five years of slow expansion, The Met has reached a total of 144 students.

The faculty at the Met strives to provide an individualized education for each student that passes through their doors. In fact, the curriculum at the Met is very different than that at a regular, traditional high school. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Education is project basedThere is very little direct instruction at the Met. Most work is done through projects the student pursues according to their passion.
  • There is only one period in the school dayInstead of having six or even seven teachers, Met students have only one: their Advisor. Because they spend so much time with their advisor Met students form a strong bond and enjoy more one-on-one attention.
  • Internships start highschoolers on the path to successStudents at the Met acquire internships as early as their Freshman year, providing valuable real-world experience in the workplace.
  • Students receive feedback from everyone, not just their teachersEach quarter, every Met student presents the work they've done to a panel comprised of their peers, their parents, their advisor and their mentor. Each panelist provides examples of things they could do better, and things they did right.
  • "One Student at a Time" AttitudeBecause of small class sizes and low student-teacher ratios, the Met's staff can provide plenty of one-on-one time to each and every pupil.
  • Everyone is involved in the teaching processThe student, parent, mentor and Met advisor collaborate to design a learning plan that meets the child's unique interests and passions, while ensuring that the work they are doing is valuable for the future.
