Work experience

1992Present

Creative Director / Owner

Daze Design & Art

Ad agency / Artist colony

Editing and writing, digital and print graphic design, website creation and design, fine art.

  • Website creation, coding and maintenance: Trillium Real Estate (WordPress.org, see Current Work sidebar) and Lifeworks Coaching (Dreamweaver). Now offline: MakeBingos.com (Joomla!); QuotesPlus.com; originals of CUO.com, Avondale Schools District, WordPress version of Lifeworks Coaching's site; and several others.
  • Other projects: Newsletters, ads, brochures, annual reports, books, posters, logo and branding design, multimedia kiosks, interfaces.
  • Clients: University of Michigan, Credit Union ONE, Ford Motor Company, Eaton, Delphi, Eastern Michigan University, AOL, Lifeworks Coaching, Trillium Real Estate, health and elder care companies, travel and insurance agencies, schools.
  • Fine art creation: Painting, drawing, portraiture and printmaking.
  • Significant accomplishments:
    • Created Credit Union ONE's website in 1996 after persuading a very resistant management team that the Internet was not a fad and that CUO would be well served by a web presence. The 60-page site we debuted grew to more than 120 and was the starting point for the IT department to add online banking and other secure services. I freshened the site daily for two years by myself.
    • Served as final editor and designer of EMU's 2001 reaccreditation documents, an especially important filing since the university needed to remove its provisional academic status. The accreditor's team members publicly noted their pleasure that the documents, compiled from every EMU department and office, were "remarkably of one voice," easy to read in both writing style and layout design, and key to Eastern earning full accreditation.

Daze Design & Art was formerly Exit2 Multimedia, jointly owned with a business partner.

Assistant Editor

Ann Arbor Observer

Monthly newsmagazine

  • First-line editing of one biennial and two annual city guides, which cover Ann Arbor and nearby communities. All three include thousands of offices, services, businesses, groups and restaurants.
  • Prepared and posted all stories from the print edition to the website.
  • Assisted in hiring, training and supervising researchers and interns.
  • Started and managed social media, specifically a Facebook page and Twitter account.
    • I volunteered these hours.
  • Designed the events calendar.
    • Before I designed the calendar, which makes up 3/5 of the publication, it was jammed up to deadline by an overburdened designer while I, technically an editorial employee, had long periods of downtime. I convinced the managing editor it would be more efficient to have me design it. The calendar was ready 1 to 3 days before press day.
  • Typeset and indexed all 5 Observer publications.
    • Reduced the average time to set the calendar from 3 hours down to 30 minutes.
  • Produced editorial payroll.
    • Faced with a cumbersome, time-consuming manual process, I upgraded it to an efficient database program.

    • Revamped the journal’s peer review process, reducing it from a yearlong to a four-month average.
  • Created and ran teaching conferences for EMU faculty with national and local speakers, 1990, 1991.
    • Attendance both years was more than 170, considered "phenomenal" by the provost, whose mild support in 1990 changed to wild support the next year.

Raphael Greene

Supervisor/Colleague: My association with Ms. Sally Day is pleasant and highly productive, involving proofreading by her at the highest level of care in connection with documents of the highest level of importance. Ms. Day established herself to be the most assiduous proofreader among all whom I have encountered -- and I have encountered many! If there is work of that nature to be done, I recommend Ms. Day with gratitude and without hesitation.”

Former Partner: “Sally was the creative director and force for our graphic design company. She created print ads, edited and wrote copy, developed multimedia graphical components and interacted directly with clients. All of this was done with a high degree of professionalism while working under tight deadlines. She is very talented.”

Michael Betzold

Supervisor/Colleague: “Sally Wright Day cares about getting every detail of her work right, but she also can see the big picture and keeps thinking of ways to improve the work. She's especially adept at working on a team to make a jointly produced product shine. She's highly skilled, enthusiastic, motivated, and exceptionally conscientious. And she's an exceptionally skilled writer with a strong voice and a pungent style.”
