  • Significant accomplishments:
    • Created Credit Union ONE's website in 1996 after persuading a very resistant management team that the Internet was not a fad and that CUO would be well served by a web presence. The 60-page site we debuted grew to more than 120 and was the starting point for the IT department to add online banking and other secure services. I freshened the site daily for two years by myself.
    • Served as final editor and designer of EMU's 2001 reaccreditation documents, an especially important filing since the university needed to remove its provisional academic status. The accreditor's team members publicly noted their pleasure that the documents, compiled from every EMU department and office, were "remarkably of one voice," easy to read in both writing style and layout design, and key to Eastern earning full accreditation.

MSN News
  • Run the World section of news.msn.com as part of the East Coast / NYC team.
  • Track, produce and often write breaking news stories.
  • Edit wire and original MSN News stories.
  • Check stories' readership and adjust the section accordingly.
  • Build stories in the site's article form: Write headlines, abstracts and captions; choose and prep photos; add videos and photo galleries; choose SEO keywords; publish online; decide their order of importance.

  • Designed and created Trillium's site, using WordPress with a Genesis framework and child theme template. Wrangled the template's CSS to fit Trillium's corporate style.
  • Updated the company's two websites.
  • Wrote and/or edited posts for several blogs.
  • Prepared art for sites.
  • Tracked SEO results and took measures to improve TRE's placement.
  • Managed social media presence.
  • Directed company and agent marketing.
    • Designed, wrote, produced and placed ads.
    • Promoted listings on many real estate and social media sites.
  • Administrative duties:
    • Client care: Created and maintained their files, updated them on progress of their sale or purchase, prepared contracts and closing packets.
    • Office: Made listing appointments, researched prospective properties, maintained office equipment and supplies.

Monthly newsmagazine

  • First-line editing of one biennial and two annual city guides, which cover Ann Arbor and nearby communities. All three include thousands of offices, services, businesses, groups and restaurants.
  • Prepared and posted all stories from the print edition to the website.
  • Assisted in hiring, training and supervising researchers and interns.
  • Started and managed social media, specifically a Facebook page and Twitter account.
    • I volunteered these hours.
  • Designed the events calendar. 
    • Before I designed the calendar, which makes up 3/5 of the publication, it was jammed up to deadline by an overburdened designer while I, technically an editorial employee, had long periods of downtime. I convinced the managing editor it would be more efficient to have me design it. The calendar was ready 1 to 3 days before press day.
  • Typeset and indexed all 5 Observer publications.
    • Reduced the average time to set the calendar from 3 hours down to 30 minutes.
  • Produced editorial payroll. 
    • Faced with a cumbersome, time-consuming manual process, I upgraded it to an efficient database program.

Executive Editor, Issues & Inquiry in College Learning and Teaching

  • Responsible for every editorial, design, production and promotional aspect of this international refereed scholarly journal.
    • Doubled subscriptions and submissions in one year.
    • Redesigned the journal and created cover art for each issue.
1988 - 1992

Manager / Managing Editor

  • Managed all business, publication and promotional operations of the Faculty Center for Instructional Excellence.
    • New marketing strategies I implemented helped increase seminar attendance by 20-35 percent every year.
  • Designed, edited and produced a national refereed journal, The Journal of Professional Studies, and a faculty newsletter about teaching effectiveness, both published three times per year.
    • Revamped the journal’s peer review process, reducing it from a yearlong to a four-month average.
  • Created and ran teaching conferences for EMU faculty with national and local speakers, 1990, 1991.
    • Attendance both years was more than 170, considered "phenomenal" by the provost, whose mild support in 1990 changed to wild support the next year.

  • Created and ran a boot camp for collegiate journalists, 1990.

  • Advised and trained 50-150 students on the staffs of the newspaper, yearbook, literary/art magazine and monthly feature magazine.
  • Responsible for a $200,000 budget, all generated by student advertising sales that paid my salary and the total costs of three of the publications.
