Independent Media Professional

Shell Oil Company - Deer Park Refinery

In January of 2007 I was hired to create and run an in-house digital media department as a more engaging way to communicate to a workforce of 3,000 to 5,000 people. During my eight years based at the Deer Park site, I worked closely with people at all levels within Shell including many of the top leaders. While my main responsibility was creating media for the internal use, I was also part of the community relations team. I frequently interfaced directly with members of the Deer Park community as well as corporate partners such as 3M, Oxy, McKinsey, etc. In addition to my experience at a Downstream manufacturing facility, I have also done work for other businesses within Shell, producing material for Upstream, Pipeline, Retail and others. I am very familiar with brand guidelines and industry best practices. Most notably, my work received a Global Service Recognition Award for a series of training videos which are now standardized training material.

The majority of the work consisted of shooting and editing videos for various departments at the site. All aspects of production were my responsibility. Some examples are:

  • Producing a twice-monthly late-night style talkshow with the general manager. Shot in-studio or sometimes on-location at a job site. It was an engaging platform to communicate with, and recognize employees.
  • Working closely with the Communications Department on storyboard/script creation and editing of all digital assets for Shell Deer Park.
  • Managing multiple deadline-sensitive projects on a regular basis.
  • Ensuring that Shell Deer Park's video presence is consistent with Royal Dutch Shell's best practices and branding guidelines.
  • Designing and running a soundproof audio/video studio equipped with Kino-Flo lighting, Chroma key, Teleprompter, Audio, etc.
  • Designing a PTZ camera with microphone array system in conference/meeting rooms for streaming live to other areas of the plant using VBrick streaming servers. It is designed to be as easy as possible to use so that meeting members can run the system themselves. It has been incredibly robust and required very little support over the years.
  • Being a resource for various departments within the organization to help create videos and Power Point Presentations for things like training, safety, security, and just for fun sometimes. Also occasionally my services would be shared with other parts of the business like Shell Headquarters at One Shell Plaza in Downtown Houston, Shell/Motiva Port Arthur Refinery, Shell Woodcreek, etc.

At the Deer Park Site, video is now totally integrated with day to day business. The workforce has gone from being reluctant to being on camera to very eager to use video as a means of communication.
