Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission

Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission are twin organizations which form the core of a worldwide spiritual movement (known as Ramakrishna Movement or Vedanta Movement), which aims at the harmony of religions, harmony of the East and the West, harmony of the ancient and modern, spiritual fulfillment, all-round development of human faculties, social equality and peace for all humanity without any distinctions of caste, creed, race, religion or nationality.

RAMAKRISHNA MATH is a monastic organization for men brought into existence by Sri Ramakrishna (1836-1886), the great 19th century saint of Bengal who is regarded as the Prophet of the Modern Age.

RAMAKRISHNA MISSION is a registered society in which monks of Ramakrishna Math and devotees cooperate in conducting various types of social services mainly in India. It was founded by Sri Ramakrishna’s chief apostle, Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902), one of the foremost thinkers and religious leaders of the present age. Although Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission are legally and financially separate, they are closely interrelated in several other ways and are to be regarded as twin organizations.

The Math and the Mission together have 164 centres (excluding private centres) all over India and in different parts of the world. The Headquarters of these centers are situated in Belur Math, Howrah, West Bengal.

Swami Vivekananda’s Goa Visit:

The secret of religion lies not in theories but in practice. To be good and do good – that is the whole of religion. – Swami Vivekananda.

The year 1893 marked an important milestone in the history of world religions. It was the year when a dynamic, vibrant young monk from India made a powerful, moving speech about the basic oneness of all religions at the World Parliament of Religions held in Chicago. This monk was none other than Swami Vivekananda, the promising disciple of Sri Ramakrishna. But before Swamiji embarked on this historic journey to America, he travelled the length and breadth of India as an wandering monk (Parivrajaka). It was during this time that Swamiji’s holy footprints scanctified the Goan soil. He arrived in Goa on 27th October, 1892 and was guest of Sri subrai Naik at Damodar Sal, Madgao. Swamiji spent about a week in Goa and visited the famous temples and studied Christian theology at the Rachol Seminary.
