English Composition Instructor

Western Washington University

As a graduate student instructor at Western Washington University, I have had the opportunity to lesson plan, create visual presentations, collaborate with other faculty, facilitate class discussions, lecture, and assess students. I am also very familiar with education technologies such as Canvas. In addition to teaching English 101, Western's introductory composition course, I was also a TA for a 200-level course on Asian-American graphic novels. As a TA I helped teach visual literacy, facilitated discussions on literary and visual themes, and encouraged dialogues on multiculturalism and identity.

Writing Assistant

Western Washington University

As a Writing Assistant at Western Washington University's Writing Center I assisted students with their writing across disciplines, facilitated brainstorming and discussion, provided small group support, maintained the educational environment, and I contributed to writing center projects in order to improve writing center practices. During my time at this writing center I researched writing center pedagogies and used my research to advocate for and assist in implementing a "studio style" model writing center.

Writing Assistant

Edmonds Community College

As a Writing Assistant at Edmonds Community College's Writing Center I was trained in how to assist students in the EAP (English for Academic Purposes) program. In order to assist EAP students I became familiar with how to teach sentence structure, grammar, and the academic essay to ESL learners. I also assisted students enrolled in GED courses and students writing at the college level in a variety of courses. I provided one-on-one and group support and maintained long-term rapports with other assistants, instructors at the college, and students. I worked to promote a positive, productive, and inclusive learning atmosphere.

Teaching English as a Second Language Certificate

Western Washington University

I have taken face-to-face courses in linguistics, grammar, second-language acquisition theory, TESL methods and materials, and teaching academic language proficiency. While I was able to put new theories into practice by working with ESL students in all of my classes, I also assisted in ESL classrooms and taught observed ESL lessons. I assisted in a classroom of 12-16 year old ESL students, volunteered as a literacy tutor for beginner ESL students at Edmonds Community College the summer of 2013, and assisted in an EAP class the summer of 2014. In the EAP class I was able to prepare class materials and teach full lessons.
