Summary

Researcher with 3 years of professional experience working in the government sector, and 2+ years of formal academic experience. My current position has enabled me to gain experience in the various functions of the division, including: M&E, policy formulation, strategic planning and research. I am versed in both qualitative and quantitative research in various disciplines, and can synthesise information quickly. I have a keen eye for detail, possess excellent writing abilities, and work well individually and in teams. I am also well-organised and strive for efficiency in my work. Although my background is international relations, gender and development; I am passionate about human rights, youth, education and the environment. I am therefore seeking a position where I can apply my skills in using evidence-based, research driven policies to create targeted impact for under-served communities.

Researcher in Policy, Research & Planning Division

Support the work of the other divisions by conducting research, collating and analysing data, generating information briefs, and assisting in implementing M&E instruments. Major projects have included: completion/submission of overdue international reports on major international conventions; evaluation of an adolescent pregnancy programme and a rehabilitation programme, both funded by the government; and a process evaluation of a new system of financial support to children's homes in the country. Additional duties:

  • Coordinate the work and activities of a small team of researchers to ensure effective support is provided to the other divisions.
  • Assist with monitoring and tracking of major activities in other divisions. Collate and compile data/information to complete various government-mandated reports (SSIP, PSIP, Administrative Reports, etc).
  • Collate and compile information to complete UN-mandated reports on the implementation of various international conventions. 
  • Support the review of specific programmes/projects by assisting in developing evaluation instruments, conducting site visits, administering surveys, collecting and analysing data and generating reports with recommendations.
  • Support the formulation of policy by conducting relevant research on target groups.
  • Maintain relevant databases of data.
  • Maintain relationships with other government agencies and civil society.

Handled all projects/assignments in the Gender Affairs Division of an international nature, and assisted in public education/sensitisation projects that dealt with gender and development. Sample of duties:

  • Conducted research, compiled data and wrote Cabinet Notes, briefs and other documents. Also developed and maintained a subject library and various databases.

Graduate Research Assistant at School of Public & International Affairs

Compiled research on green tribunals in India - the first research ever conducted on these courts - and supported the work of the South Asia Initiative at the University.

  • Collected and organized data on green tribunals in India.
  • Organised an inter-college Brown Bag Lunch Series as part of the South Asia Cross-Collaboration Initiative. The series provided a framework for identifying possible partnerships and fostering greater awareness of South Asia-related research and teaching at NCSU.
  • Promoted the Study Abroad program “India, Working with Non-Profits: NGOs as Case Study” to students as part of the South Asia Initiative.

Intern Research Assistant

Co-operative programme involving full-time work experience in government agencies, non-profits or think- tanks in Washington, DC, and part-time classes that covered US government and current issues. Supported the Climate Change Initiative at a US non-profit specialising in ideas, research and policy solutions that positively impact people and communities of colour. 

  • Conducted extensive research on U.S. environmental policy.
  • Handled and wrote briefings for a variety of conference calls, caucus meetings and policy briefings, both on and off Capitol Hill, for the Director of Policy and Planning.
  • Completed special projects assigned by the Director and President, including inter-departmental events, and assisted in planning and hosting various Speaker Series and symposiums.

Research Assistant at 1890 Extension & Research Institute

Conducted quantitative and qualitative research on paraffin candles, and analysed the data. Also researched the advantages of bio-fuels.

  • Researched harmful effects of burning candles, performed basic chemical analyses on emission products and hazardous chemicals in paraffin candles using the GC-MS, and analyzed the output data. This project was funded by the National Institute of Food & Agriculture, and the research published and presented at the ACS National Meeting 2009.
  • Co-wrote a grant proposal endorsing the advantages of bio-fuels and the benefits of supporting their development at the university.
