Reporting directly to district Superintendent-Director, provide executive oversight of comprehensive department and technology functions for multi-academy high school, school district, and vocational school with 1,450 students.

Director of Technology

Drive significant, organization-wide technology enhancements and act as strategic leader, continually evaluating existing infrastructure and developing solutions to enhance educational capabilities and efficiency. Manage multiple, competing priorities and deadlines, directing project from concept to completion while monitoring cost containment and timelines. Collaborate across hierarchies and functions, interfacing with various senior district / school leaders, government agents, and vendors to achieve objectives and deliver results on time within strict standards. Interface with diverse student population and faculty to assess needs and provide classroom technologies. Create documentation and reports essential to capture funding and meet governmental compliance.

Key Projects and Achievements:

  • Orchestrate technology activities during state-sponsored merger with two other schools into a new, multimillion-dollar complex, managing all technical initiatives to build highly effective infrastructure while ensuring efficiency, technological redundancy, and cost containment.
  • Plan and implement upgrades to network and systems to improve security, storage capacity, and data management, as well as transferring POS and student information to new hardware and software.
  • Spearhead private cloud initiative, creating new infrastructure to allow students to access programs and documents from anywhere with computer / internet access, resulting in more flexibility, connectivity, and enhanced data collection from students in the field.
  • Successfully enhance teacher capabilities by transferring all grade reporting to electronic system and instituting new system to allow instructors to teach courses online.

In a highly independent position, charged with creating and overseeing a robust and sophisticated technology infrastructure to support the rapidly expanding needs of this high-profile and historic independent secondary school with 100 employees, 407 boarding and day students, and a $13M overall operating budget. Provide technical and operations leadership to a support staff of three full-time employees and five student volunteers. Develop budget and provide regular financial reporting to the Board. Work with vendors to identify solutions to organizational needs. Plan strategies for specialized purchases with the business office and senior business management. Collaborate with faculty to expand individual knowledge and leverage the use of technology in the classroom. Develop and deploy a long-term technology strategy and component projects that have systematically produced an infrastructure widely recognized as highly effective, advanced in its approach, and efficient to operate - achieving these results at a reasonable overall cost.

Key Projects and Achievements:                                                               

  • Direct routine maintenance within a mixed environment of Windows and Macintosh computers, including security, license monitoring, and software distribution systems.
  • Oversee operation of servers, including domain controllers, DHCP server, DNS server, proxy server, filtering software, file server, firewalls, mail server (POP and SMTP), and web server (MS IIS and Lotus Domino).
  • Spearheaded a complete overhaul of technology at the Academy, beginning with three servers and 90 outdated Macintosh computers in 1998 to deliver a campus-wide network that includes nearly 300 computers and terminals and 30+ servers with dramatically improved performance and near-zero downtime.
  • Designed a leasing program with a three-year refresh element that provides students and faculty with current technology at attractive rates.

Selected projects include the following: server blade conversion, Citrix deployment, multiple upgrades and rollouts, design and deployment of the first residential computing network (a fiber-optic system), advanced network security management to handle growing security concerns, and business office migrations. Instructor, Lawrence Academy

Designed a three-term course in Decision Theory for advanced students. The college-level course examines psychological aspects of decision theory, employs various decision models, uses sophisticated spreadsheet tools to perform simulation and modeling, and takes a case-study approach to evaluating decisions. Created all course materials, including examinations, and secured approval of the syllabus from a team of department chairs.

Founder & Chairperson, The EduSophia Foundation

Established the initial structure for a not-for-profit foundation whose goal is to create an educational "think tank" of teachers, education researchers, and technology industry representatives examining the role of technology in education and its potential to bring about fundamental improvements.

Independent IT Consultant

As an undergraduate student, worked with clients on the creation of custom solutions to World Wide Web design needs.
