Sales Associate

As a sales associate with the PGA TOUR, I, like many other people, am trying to move upstream without a paddle. The current economic conditions make it extremely difficult to secure corporate sponsorship for a golf tournament specifically the Senior Players Championship in Baltimore. My job consists of not only selling brand exposure to companies, but also generating elevated interest in the tournament itself. As one might imagine, it’s fairly difficult considering the circumstances. Many corporations, specifically financial institutions, are hesitant to place their name on anything in fear of backlash from the general public. Moreover, the Champions Tour, which is the former Senior PGA TOUR, does not include truly high-profile players. We do not have the services of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson or Vijay Singh—yet.Consequently, my day-to-day tasks involve marketing the tournament and creating interest first.Second, I must assure companies the bang is worth the buck—that investing in our tournament will be beneficial short and long term.Initially, I am able to provide a platform to engage the company’s clients during tournament week providing hospitality suites and other on-course packages. In the long run, their marketing campaign is bolstered by brand exposure on tickets, programs, video boards and scoreboards all of which are shown are on TV.

I am also the coordinator of the TICKETS Fore CHARITY fundraising program. The TICKETS Fore CHARITY program is designed to generate revenue for local charities where PGA TOUR events are held. This year was the inaugural year for the TFC program at the Senior Players Championship. It has taken a grassroots effort to build a program like TFC.I have extremely enjoyed the challenges I face each day learning and adapting to the different problems that arise from any start-up program.I spent considerable time researching and contacting over 1000 non-profit organizations in the state of Maryland. After initial contact, I spoke with over 500 of these non profits about the program and gauged their interest level in TICKETS Fore CHARITY.I am in constant contact with the participating organizations each day through email or over the phone offering marketing ideas and promotional materials that will help them reach their constituency more effectively. Many organizations have limited resources which poses a challenge, but also an opportunity for new, innovative marketing plans.
