Downstate Illinois Innocence Project

The Downstate Illinois Innocence Project has the mission of evaluating and investigating cases of Illinois inmates with a strong likelihood of actual innocence. Project staff assist in researching and providing legal representation in these cases while also educating the public about the causes of wrongful convictions as well as possible reforms of the criminal justice system. Student interns are tasked with evaluating case documents, researching the legal issues and assist in interviewing witnesses or obtaining discovery. The Downstate Illinois Innocence Project provides students with a valuable experience in the criminal legal process and exposes them to real issues faced by professionals.
