Promoted through a series of engineering management positions culminated as Director of Engineering

Representative accomplishments include:

-At Senior Leadership’s request took over leadership of a floundering $75M U.S. Army ground vehicle development program.Redefined and implemented the technical and management directions for the program.Resulted in successful completion of the product development phase of the program.

-Managed development project activities for nine successfully launched artillery systems for U.S. and foreign militaries.

-Directed all company funded Independent R&D projects.At the end of second year of leadership BMY received the highest Independent R & D review rating issued by the US Army, Tank Automotive Command.

Director Engineering & Quality Assurance

Clark Material Handling Co.

Directed the product development; production support engineering, and production quality assurance for the broad lineup of electric and internal combustion engine forklifts with annual sales of $450M.

-Implemented successful concurrent engineering development processes that reduced development times by 40% for all new products and major product upgrades.Resulted in 7 new product model line introductions in 2 years.

-Expanded engineering support to Manufacturing and Purchasing.Product design changes resulted in $5MM in production cost savings in the first year of implementation.

-Instituted technical publications systems and process improvements that resulted in reduced cost and increased on-time availability of Operators, Service, and Parts manuals.

-Developed and launched the implementation of ISO 9001 certification actions.Improved in-plant and supplier quality assurance processes, procedures, and records.

V.P. Engineeering & Operations Support

MetoKote Corp.

Provided capital equipment, technical oversight and operations support for 38 plants in seven countries.

-     Directed the strategies and activities of Corporate Equipment Engineering, Process Engineering, Quality  Assurance, Purchasing, and Environmental/ Health/Safety departments.

-Completed the development, fabrication, installation, and production start-up of 7 new coating lines in 20 months.  Implemented a methodology to improve accuracy and consistency of cost estimates and trained Engineering and Program Management staff.  The $13MM projects were completed on schedule and under cost.

-Implemented ISO 14001 complaint Environmental Health Safety Management system and drove environmental regulatory compliance to best levels in corporate history.

-Developed and launched corporate QS/TS16949 Quality System, obtained uniform global quality standards and aligned processes with automotive customer’s standards.

-Contributed to the successful development and championed the roll-out of a “Balanced Scorecard” for the corporation.


VP Engineering

Spectrum Brands

Created a new, centralized Engineering department, combined resources obtained through multiple company acquisitions.

-  Assessed processes, methods, skills and expertise across all functions.Constituted a new organization with clearly defined roles and responsibilities, motivated and built employee trust, and selected and hired new staff to fulfill talent needs.

-Defined and implemented the organization, processes, and tools that enabled the successful development and production launch of more than 100 new consumer products per year.Included implementation of a “Stage-Gate” Product Development Process and extensive use of QFD/House of Quality, CAD/CAE tools and rapid prototyping.

-Spearheaded the development of new product ideas and application of new technologies that increased consumer appeal and grew sales volume by 8% annually.

-Managed the transition of sustaining and production support engineering from the U.S. to a new Chinese engineering center, resulting in increased engineering throughput, more effective communications with manufacturers and improved product quality.

-Established, staffed, and managed a corporate Industrial Design team that developed exciting product designs and new, effective Brand Languages that enhanced brand recognition and appeal at retail.


Director R&D and Design Engineering

Responsible for the R&D and Engineering of Maytag’s Laundry Products.Created and launched 5 new Laundry product lines and readied multiple new advanced concepts for final development.

-Developed new consumer laundry product lines with breakthroughs in product quality using Lean, 6-Sigma, and CAE/CAD technologies. Washer Product line was ranked Number 1 by Consumer Reports and achieved best initial quality of any Maytag product line. Drying Center featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show and earned best product honors from Business Week, Popular Science, and Good Housekeeping.

-Drove product cost reductions resulting in over $50MM in annual savings.

-Oversaw the training and successful implementation of Design for LeanSigmamethods within Maytag Laundry R&D.Designs optimized for manufacturability, performance, reliability, and consumer value.

-Envisioned and instituted a state-of-the-art virtual simulation department that included expert staff, CAE tools, and design processes.This resulted in reduced product development cost and time by 25% and improved the “at-launch” product quality to the highest in company history.

-Instituted improvements to the processes used to develop the electronic/software control systems for new products.In two years the Capability Maturity Modeling, CMM, Scores improved from a 1 to a 2.5+.

-Contributed to composition and successfully implementation of a corporate-wide “Stage-Gate” Product Development Process.


V.P. Product Development

NACCO Materials Handling Group

Defined the organizational structure and managed the corporate Product Development Center for this global leader in mobile, industrial equipment manufacturing. Annual operating budgets exceeded $20M with a staff of 160 comprised of Design/Test/Manufacturing Engineering, Purchasing, Finance, Shop Operations, Information Technologies, Facilities Management, Human Resources, Data Configuration Management, and Technical Publications. Organization changes resulted in reduced cycle times for new product development and better responsiveness to needs of customers, suppliers, and manufacturing operations.

-Led successful product development of multiple forklift product lines produced on 3 continents for 3 brands with annual sales in excess of $1.2B.

-Established and directed a fully integrated, multi-function corporate product development center.The focused, co-located project team approach resulted in a 30% reduction in product development times with more efficient utilization of resources.

-Guided product value improvement activities that resulted in more than $10MM/year in margin improvement.

-Advanced the successful implementation of Demand-Flow, pull manufacturing systems that resulted in up to 50% reductions in product assembly labor costs and major reductions in finished goods inventories.

-Instituted an engineering reorganization that placed engineering staff with product improvement responsibilities at six globally distributed manufacturing plants. Achieved faster engineering response times for product improvements and better response to customers’ geographic preferences.
