Fire Ecologist Trainee

  • Worked extensively with Regional Fire Ecologist Beth Buchanan
  • Designs, organizes and prepares abstracts, posters and oral presentations for the Francis Marion & Sumter National Forest prescribe fire program.
    • Examples include Francis Marion & Sumter National Forest prescribed fire prioritization software for display and presentation at 4th International Fire Congress, 4th Fire Behavior and Fuels Conference, and South Carolina Prescribe Fire Council (see attached documents).
  • Organizes, prepares and conducts online webinars and to improve operating efficiency between different fire management programs in Region 8.
    • Ex. "Prescribed Fire Effects and Management Implications" online webinars for Francis Marion Sumter National Forest, Florida National Forest and Daniel Boone National Forest
  • Communicates complex scientific results in layman terms to forest staff and public
    • Ex. Explaining qualitative and quantitative statistics to describe fire effects analysis results and implications on management (Florida National Forests and Daniel Boone National Forests)
    • Provides ecological and financial justification for prescribe burning activities using Francis Marion & Sumter prescribe fire prioritization software for internal and public interest groups.
  • Organizes, coordinates, maintains, and serves as contact point for a Regional program
    • Ex. Region 8 FFI fire effects database which covers all the region's forest fire effects monitoring data.
  • Prepares oral and written documents for regional and local reports and publications.
    • Ex. FFI data analysis reports, Francis Marion & Sumter Annual Forest Plan Review, regional carbon reports
  • Develops local software to solve communication problems.
    • Ex. Used Visual Basic to design and write Francis Marion & Sumter National Forest prescribe fire prioritization software
    • Ex. Used HTML code to designed Google Earth KML layer to display Francis Marion and Sumter National Forest fire effects data in format easily accessed by internal and public personnel to solve technology transfers issues between resource specialist and technicians.
  • Organizes, directs, and leads focus groups for local forest level projects.
    • Ex. Surveys for scientific input into the development of the Francis Marion & Sumter National Forest prescribe fire prioritization software
    • Synthesized timber, botanist and wildlife online surveys into one system to conduct forest wide condition class assessment which was used to highlight and emphasize fire needed areas.
  • Participates in interagency workshops and focus groups
    • Ex. Participates in Fire Learning Network (Blue-Ridge) on behalf of Francis Marion Sumter National forest.
    • Participated in Landfire bps re-classification through the use of VDDT models
  • Plans, organizes and participates in local public relation events.
    • Ex. Participates in career day events at local elementary, middle and high schools emphasizing the Forest Service mission, job duties and career planning.
  • Writes technical papers and instruction manuals for fire management programs.
    • Developed and wrote Francis Marion & Sumter National Forest Fire Monitoring Guidebook (see attached documents)
    • Writes prescribe fire burn plans in requiring input and collaboration with other forest staff, private landowners, non-profit organizations, state agencies and other non-government organization (NGO's).
    • Prepared Enoree Ranger district Giant Cane Restoration Project scoping letter.
    • Evaluates and analyzes the success of the fuels management and fire reduction activity for Francis Marion and Sumter National forest for Forest Annual Review.
    • Assisted in preparation of Chattahoochee and Oconee National Forest fire effects data for environmental group Georgia Forest Watch.
  • Answers calls and personal guest questions about various forest service programs, jobs, and management activities.
  • Prepares and instructs various training classes
    • Organized, developed and instructed Fire Effects Monitoring 101 & 201 to Region 8 Fire Management Officers (FMO's) for 2012 burn boss workshops

  • Directed three STEP students in the regional office for fire effects data entry from forest district where daily technical and unexpected problems would arise that would have to be solved either through phone instructions, email, or webex conversations.
  • Successfully performed as squad boss on number wildland fire events where situational conditions are constantly changing and decision are needed to be met.

Other Job Duties
  • Prepares smoke models, fire behavior reports and mitigation measures each morning of prescribe burns.
  • Participates in the planning (prescribed burn plan), scheduling (fire prioritization model), and execution (FFT1 (t), ITC5 (t) HECM (t)) of prescribe fire activities and fire suppression activities.
  • Conducts plant surveys for forest planning activities required in environmental assessments
  • Conducts bob white surveys for department of natural resources in annual quail covey count
  • Conducts vegetation monitoring in The Carolina Vegetation Survey (PULSE)
    • The survey sponsors annual "pulse" events where the core scientists and volunteer botanists from across the region study a portion of North Carolina intensively for a 10-day period. Data collection methods are standardized and are now widely employed across the Southeast.
  • Conducts bird monitoring for wildlife departments for forest monitoring and planning activities.
  • Establish, monitored, maintained, and analyzed the data from the Francis Marion & Sumter fire effects monitoring plots on all 4 districts. Areas include Appalachian Mountain Range (Andrew Pickens RD), Piedmont (Long Cane RD, Enoree RD) and Coastal Plain (Francis Marion RD) to see the effects on vegetation, soil to make management future management recommendations.
