Rachel Halfhill

While at RPS Evans-Hamilton, I learned to use Matlab and wrote code for new programs to help with data analysis and GIS mapping. I routinely utilized ArcGIS and AutoCad to create maps combining the data we collected and site information. 

I was an effective data processor for current meter and CTD data, and I worked on GIS mapping and data visualization. I also have experience servicing instrumentation and writing technical and report documents. As an oceanographer, I:

• Learned to use new equipment and software on-the-job
• Compiled and edited major scientific reports under strict formatting guidelines
• Wrote Matlab code for data analysis and visual interpretation.
• Created site maps and maps showing current and wind speed and direction.
• Integrated Matlab processing with ArcGIS to improve our product line.
• Researched outside data sources to improve our analysis capabilities.

I studied biological oceanography while at the University of Washington in Seattle. I participated in research cruises during the Spring and Summer, studying the connection between light, absorption, and phytoplankton using GIS remote sensing. I also learned to manage the Oceanography Department website, edited a student magazine, and learned the basics of using Matlab.

I chose to attend a local community college to take advantage of lower tuition costs and rent-free living. The experience had the extra advantages of small class sizes and closer relationships to professors. While at YVCC, I was the stage manager for a play, wrote for and edited the student newspaper, tutored other college students in biology and mathematics, assisted with a summer math program for high school students, and was granted a Community College Internship at PMML's Marine Sciences Lab in Sequim, WA.
