Melissa Wantz: Foothill Dragon Press Journalism Advisor

"Fidelity has proven herself in six short months to be one of the top three students to enter my program in its history. She has shown consistent- even spectacular- initiative with her assignments, resulting in some of the best work the Dragon Press has ever published. She is a remarkable writer and one of the most exciting reporters I've had the pleasure to teach because she is so self-directed. Her articles read as if conceived, researched and written by an adult with years of reporting experience. She works independently but accepts criticism with maturity in order to improve. Funny, determined and honest, Fidelity's energy and passion for journalism eclipse any other student I've had to date."

I interviewed the author of a California cyberbullying bill and its advocates and opponents. One of my story's national sources, Frank LoMonte, executive director of the Student Press Law Center in Virginia, tweeted: "The most thorough, well-researched, nuanced story on cyberbullying law I've ever read. It's by a teenager."  The National Scholastic Press Association also showcased the article on its Facebook page and Twitter account.

On my own initative and by making cold contacts by phone and email, I established a half dozen national sources to provide a nuanced and comprehensive overview of the pros and cons of common Core standards in math. In addition to reaching out to school sources, I interviewed Eagle Forum founder Phyllis Schlafly; Stanford professor and Common Core Verification Board MemberJames Milgram; Common Core author William McCallum of University of Arizona; Mark Naison of Fordham University and more.
