Community Engagement Exercise

Individual or Organization Chosen for engagement exercise: Ashlee Jernigan. She grew up Hayden, Alabama and lived there with her parents and younger brother Clay (21) before going to college. She's studying to being a nutritionist and this past semester she was working with the soccer team. I chose to interview because I saw her lot but didn't know much about her. Also, she's from a different country. I learned more about after talking to her for about 30 minutes. She loves watching sports and since she's becoming a nutrionist she loves working with athletes. In her free time she likes to spend time with her family at their beach house in Panama. Family means a lot to her. Het biggest worry is that something bad will happen to her family one day when she isn't around. Especially with her older family members, although 'home' is only 1,5 hours away she still worries about their health. Her role model is her mother. She taught her anything she needs to know in life and gets along with her so well becasue they're a lot a like. I realized she's a lot like me and cares a lot about family (so do I). She told me nothing shocking but I enjoyed talking to her and getting to know her better. List of some of my values or the values I recognized in my engagement parter: 1.Family 2.Sports 3.Relaxing 4.Being there for others My personal values: 1.Family 2.Perseverance 3.Sports

Choices Planner - Career Interests

Description of Choices Planner Interests: SOCIAL and ENTERPRISING

List of 2-3 Career Titles of Interest:

1. Social Worker

2. Agent/Manager of Athlete

3. Dietitian/Nutritionist

I think what the Choices Planner showed me what corresponds with what kind of careers I'm interested in.For this assignment I decided to interview somebody that works as a Social Worker. Claire Nemcheck, 25 years old graduated from the 'Hogeschool van Amsterdam' (Undergraduate college in Amsterdam) 3 years ago. I knew her because I attended that school for a couple of months before attending UA. She's a part-time teacher at the school she graduated from and she works with teen moms that are involved in drugs. This job requires a commitment to serve with compassion while determining how advance the best interest of individuals without compromising their basic rights to fairness and justice.I learned a lot about this job by interviewing Claire. A lot of different skills are required and you have to be willing to help other out. You have to be understanding and empathic. I think this job is so great because you don't make millions but you are there for people that need help and that can be rewarding.

What I learned from this activity: As a Social Worker you have to deal with a lot but in return you get a rewarding feeling.

MBTI Descriptions

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator SELF-RESULTS: Extraversion, Sening, Feeling, Perception (ESFP) ESFPs are fun and delightful to be with. They live for the moment, and know how to make the most of each moment. They are genuinely, warmly interested in people, and love to make others happy. They're usually very kind-hearted and generous, and are always going out of their way to do something nice for someone. Their affection is simple, straight-forward and honest. They dislike theory and complexities. They often resist forming relationships which require them to function on a high Intuitive or Thinking level. They prefer for things to be light and happy, although their warmth and affection runs deep. Their potential downfall is the tendency to live entirely for the present moment, and therefore to sometimes be unaware of the direction that their relationship is heading, or to be easily distracted from long-term commitments.

What I learned from this assignment: Self Awareness

Strengths & Weaknesses

Name of Strength: Stays calm in pressure situations.

A strength I possess is staying calm in pressure/hectic situations. When a game is close and the pressure gets high I calm myself down by picking a song and playing it in my head. It helps me focus. Also, sometimes I will take a look at the crowd or our 'bench' (substitute players) and pick up their energy to work harder on the field. But I keep composed by telling myself to keep playing simple and not do anything special because I believe everything will eventually come/ work out in your favor. An example, we were playing Kentucky on the road, on a Sunday afternoon. After 1-1 in regulation we when into overtime. We had momentum from the beginning and I just kept playing and stayed calm. I had deep believe we were going to win this game. About 4 minutes into overtime, I got the ball in the 18 yard box, took a touch and scored the game-winning goal.

Name of Weakness: Holds teammates accountable for following team rules is associated with confronting teammates when necessary.

In my 'soccer career' I have always been the youngest girl on my team. I've always been able to do whatever, let my mind wander, follow the older girls and get distracted to my heart's content because I was a 'passenger'. I was along for the ride and I wanted to make the ride fun while learning from the older and more experienced girls. Things are different now. I will be one of the older girls next semester so just having fun isn't the goal anymore. I want to be a 'driver' now. Being a driver is about responsibility and I want to take responsibility as a leader to not be afraid to tell my teammates things. For example, 'Tuck your shirt in', 'Make sure you're stretching', 'Hey, pick it up now', 'Stop feeling sorry for yourself, work harder' or "Needs to be a sharper pass!'.

VISION STATEMENT (5-10 YEARS)

I am an International student athlete at the University of Alabama. I play soccer for the University and I’m a sophomore in sports as well as in academics. I live in an apartment (technically) off campus with two of my teammates. We get along great and never argue. We clean, cook, eat, watch movies together etc. Also, both of them have cars meaning I can always ask them for a ride or I can borrow their car. I don’t have car because buying a car here is too expensive for me and since I’m travelling a lot with the soccer team plus I can bike everywhere around campus has made me decide it’s not even worth it to buy a car. I’m planning on graduating here at the University, just recently I decided that. When I first got here (July 2011) I wasn’t quite sure if I was going to stay all 4 years, to me it was more like a ‘one-year-experience-to-study-and-play-soccer-abroad’. After my first year at Alabama I loved the people, campus and the atmosphere so much that I decided to come back for another year. Now our season is over and the first semester is about to be over I realized how much I’m enjoying this place by meeting new people, learning about life, playing soccer, seeing different places and so on.  I realize how great it is I got the opportunity to come here and it would be a waste to ‘throw it away’ and just go home (The Netherlands). I am going home in two years regardless; at least that is what I am planning on after I graduate. I don’t know with what major I will graduate and what job eventually suits me, I am still trying to figure that out. All I know right know is, I will be returning back to the Netherlands and play for a professional soccer team. Currently, there is a women’s soccer league that is doing well and hopefully will keep improving. At the moment, clubs are paying for the players expenses (housing, car, travelling etc.) and there is one club that already has contracts, those players are making enough money to live without having a job outside soccer. That’s my ultimate dream; playing professional soccer. I know that won’t last forever and my body is eventually going to give up, that is way I think it is also really important as an athlete to get a degree. My long term goals consist of getting a full-time job after my soccer career, starting a family, taking care of my family members (mom + dad as they get older), being engaged in the athletic world, I mainly want to keep promoting women’s soccer, and keep living healthy by exercising and eating well.

6- Month ACTION PLAN:

Short term goal 1: Meet team GPA goal: 3.0

Evidence goal is reached: When our assistant coach (Jason Lowe) gets the grade reports and lets me know I achieved the team GPA.

Steps to reach this goal:

1.See my Personal Monitor every week so I know what is coming up in the classroom

2.See the tutors I am scheduled to meet with so they can help me with difficulties

3.Start studying at least 4 days before a test or quiz

Short term goal 2: Eat/drink enough for morning workouts/practice

Evidence goal is reached: I don’t pass out or feel nauseous during/after practice

Steps to reach this goal:

1.Get up earlier to make time to have breakfast

2.Make sure I have food at home that I eat in the morning (yoghurt, bagels, bread, eggs etc.)

3.Drink at least 2 glasses of water before going to bed and drink 1 glass before going to practice

Short term goal 3: Stay fit during winter break

Evidence goal is reached: When I come back in January, I didn’t gain weight and I’m not out of breath after 3 sprints

Steps to reach this goal:

1.Execute the winter workout package we get from our strength and conditioning coach

2.Meaning exercising 45-60 minutes

3.If not motivated, make my mom force me to go or find someone that will work out with me

djb  This assignment has made me think more about the future and made me realize looking in into the future isn't that scary. I was a little scared because I'm not quite sure what I want to do with my life. No idea what I want to major in and what kind of work I want to do later in life. Now, knowing it doesn't really matter and it will come eventually I'm not that scared. It's good to know you have this life with great outlooks ahead of you. At least that's the way I look at it after writing my vision statement.

Wt  Writing my 6 month action plan has been a good assignment because it makes you think more about the short term goals you want to meet. You might think you have those in your head but it is always better to write them down so you can look at it anytime.
