Asked by founders and venture capital investors to take on non-executive Chairman role at this leading open source enterprise-class database company. Assisted with market positioning, strategy, and recruiting of management team. Led initial fund-raising efforts, and supported subsequent venture capital fundraising.

Co-Founder, Chairman and CEO

Led this enterprise and internet software company from inception through IPO and beyond to become a $200 million/year category leader. Developed company's very first product (in Java, 1996), and co-invented web services technology. Attracted investors including Mayfield Fund, Goldman Sachs, SAP and Michael Dell. Drove the company's unique partnership with SAP, resulting in $15M in direct and $100M+ in indirect revenue. Generated strongest revenue growth of any US software company in the period 1998 through 2002, and led the most successful software company IPO to date in 2000. Completed and integrated five acquisitions, including the $1.2 billion acquisition of Active Software. in 2007, webMethods was acquired by Software AG for $550 million. Led Sarbanes-Oxley compliance efforts with CFO and CIO. webMethods was acquired by Software AG in 2007 for $550 million.
