Apprentice

Information Technology Associates Program (ITAP)

ITAP is one of five programs of distinction at DePauw University. Students like myself who are in their first year with the program carry the title apprentice. ITAP brings relevant uses of technology to the liberal arts education. As an apprentice, I am exposed to many different types of technology and complete brief rotations with regards to each. The following are the rotations I have completed or am in the process of completing, as well as relevant projects from each:

Computer Programming

  • Using Visual Basic.NET, my cohorts (group members) and I developed a project that allows a user to create flashcards as a studying tool.

Web Authoring

  • With Adobe Dreamweaver I created a website that provides detailed information about some of Indiana's best mountain biking trails. To produce this I had to utilize both HTML coding and CCS.

Technical Training Strategies

  • This rotation required my cohorts and I to research and develop an instructional design method by which we could explain the available technology resources at DePauw in a simple manner to be administered to incoming freshmen students.

Contact Calling

During the winter of 2011, I was hired to do contact calling for prospective ITAP students. This was a great chance for me to develop interpersonal skills and share my own experiences with ITAP as well as all of its benefits. This was also an opportunity to practice salesmanship, as it was my job to persuade these potential students to apply for ITAP.

Customer Service Representative

Fashion Cleaners

As a customer service representative at Fashion Cleaners, some of my responsibilities were: greeting and interacting with customers, applying tags to each article of clothing, bringing cleaned clothes to the customers, pre-spotting and washing clothes, cleaning the store, managing the cash register, and overseeing most of the activity in the store.

Because my employer also provided a delivery service, I was often the only employee present in the store. Being alone required me to be prepared to handle any situation, and to manage all of the daily tasks.

Skills

Skills

Computer Programming

I was introduced to computer programming during my senior year of high school. I took an entry level computer science course in which I developed a basic understanding of Java. When I entered the ITAP program at DePauw, one of my rotations was based on the Visual Basic.NET programming language. The two vary slightly but I feel like each has given me a good grasp on the foundations of computer programming.

Microsoft Office

I have been familiar with Microsoft Office for a number years, especially with word processing, spreadsheets, and PowerPoint slides. I use Office almost daily for some aspect of my academic career, and since entering the Information Technology Associates Program my frequency of use has greatly increased.

Adobe Dreamweaver

In the Information Technology Associates Program at Depauw University, I frequently used the program Dreamweaver to create HTML documents for my web design rotation.

Spanish

I have taken a course in Spanish every semester since sixth grade. Also, in the summer of 2010 I participated in a service learning/immersion program in which myself and other DePauw students traveled to Costa Rica. We lived for two weeks on DePauw's campus practicing our speaking abilities (no English was allowed), then spent two weeks in Costa Rica living with a local family. That experience was the most beneficial in developing my Spanish-speaking ability.
