Founded consulting organization focusing on writing computer-related material (see Publications) and delivering consulting, training, and development services for desktop, server, and mobile applications. Clients included Microsoft, IBM Sequent, Ford, and O'Reilly & Associates. Taught Microsoft Certified Master | Exchange unified messaging course content; contributed to development of MCM | Exchange exams and to Microsoft Learning 70-662/70-663 certification exams for Microsoft Exchange. Developed iOS applications for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the 5-star rated LDS Tools app) and demonstrations at the Microsoft Exchange Conference. As a part-time contributing editor to Windows IT Pro magazine, wrote more than 500 columns and feature articles on Exchange, WIndows, mobility, and security.

Responsible for creating content for the Acuitus Digital Tutor, a revolutionary product that gives every student the power of an expert human tutor. Developed Exchange-related content, including lectures, activities, and hands-on labs, using a proprietary set of tools that integrate live content with the tutoring system. Taught US Navy students at CENINFODOM Corry Station, including supervising a 16-week school with 8 Navy and 4 civilian instructors. Worked with Navy SPAWAR staff to design Digital Tutor curriculum. Led cross-functional team efforts to redesign student assessments, academic review processes, and other core components to better fit customer requirements.

Took initiative to drive deployment of Windows 7, Exchange 2010, and OCS 2007 R2 into a formerly Linux-based environment. Led company-wide effort to analyze physical and information security of company networks both onsite and at customer locations.

  • Founding partner of consulting company providing services to Microsoft and enterprise customers. Led competitive analysis, consulting, development, and implementation projects centered on Windows Server, Microsoft Exchange, Office Communications Server/Lync, Microsoft Office, and other products.
  • Responsible for leading the platform team, developing business, and establishing sales in new market segments.
  • Ran a P&L business that grew from $0 to more than $3million/year in revenue. 
  • Acquired and managed customers including the American Red Cross, Ameriprise Financial, Zippo Manufacturing, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and multiple product groups inside Microsoft.
  • Lead contributor to major projects for Microsoft, including the Data Encryption Toolkit for Mobile PCs, the Windows Server 2003 Security Guide, and a variety of competitive studies for the Exchange and OCS product teams.

Specified, designed, implemented, and tested multiple public-key infrastructre and cryptographic components (including CA, SMTP certificate server, LDAP and X.500 libraries, PKCS#11 clients) on multiple platforms (Solaris, Win32, MacOS 7.x/8.x) and tools (gcc, make, Purify, dbx, Visual C++, Borland C++, CodeWarrior). Wrote documentation, on-line help, and marketing collaterals for Macintosh products.

Specified, designed, and implemented UNIX and Windows NT versions of Product Model Review, an Intergraph product for conducting collaborative network walkthroughs of 3-D models. Ported original UNIX version (developed with acc and dbx) to Windows NT, using C++ and the Microsoft Foundation Class Library. Made major contributions to the Jupiter CAD framework for Windows. Led development of transactional undo system for award-winning Imagineer Technical (2D drafting) and Solid Edge (3D mechanical design) applications. Specified, designed, and implemented in C a UNIX translator for piping data, now offered by Intergraph as a commercial product. Developed custom UNIX system security applications for a classified ship modeling lab. Member of team responsible for building internal and public corporate WWW servers.

Team lead for the User & Mission Computation subsystem of the Enhanced HOSC System, which supports shuttle operations from the Marshall Space Flight Center . Led requirements analysis and detailed design of 40,000-line real-time, UNIX-based software component. Emphasis on team design and development using CASE tools (Software Through Pictures, Marconi RTM), DOD-STD-2167A, and C on SunOS, Solaris, and SGI Irix workstations (using both gcc and vendor compilers.)

Control Data Corp. Government Systems Group

Worked as part of the Ada Language System/Navy compiler team. Designed and coded changes to all Ada components of the compiler, linker, and importer, running on VAX/VMS and embedded platforms. Developed and used test plans and automated testing tools based on ACVC tests. Wrote DOD-STD-2167A system documentation.
