Dr. Judith Van Houten

"I greatly admire Paul. He has been successful in all stages of his career in part because he is extremely hard working and bright.  Also key to Paul's success is his affability.  Paul remains calm and positive under all circumstances, even in dealing with very difficult people."

Dr. Paul Held

"For several years, Paul and I comprised the entire scientific staff at BioTek Instruments, a small biotech company that has since grown in stature in Vermont, in part due to his efforts.  Professionally, he is without equal in regards to his knowledge, honesty, integrity and good nature.  He relates well with co-workers and is the type of person who can thrive in almost any situation."

David Binch

"For more than a decade I've had the pleasure of working with Paul on a variety of civic and professional organizations and have always been impressed by his grasp of the issues, his thoughtful ideas, and his firm but tactful talent in managing meetings where he is the program leader. A specific example would be the Vermont Technology Council, an organization whose Board of Directors is composed of senior representatives from higher education and the business community and which Paul has served for many years as President/Executive Director.   ...  His academic achievements speak for themselves but his broad knowledge of what's going on in the world and his thoughts, and sense of humor when appropriate, on many topics are always on the mark."

Fred Lane

"I first met Paul when he joined the Burlington School Board in April 2003. From the start, he brought a thoughtful and intelligent approach to the challenging and often complex issues facing the Board. Given his experience in higher education and his evident skills, Paul was quickly asked to take over the Board's Finance Committee and in 2005, was elected chair of the Board. It was under his leadership as chair that the Burlington School Board undertook one its most far-reaching, controversial, and important initiatives, an effort to address serious socio-economic inequality among the various elementary schools in the District. Without doubt, the Board's work have been completely stymied without Paul's calm guidance, his outstanding communication skills, and his passionate commitment to a better educational outcome for every Burlington student."

Bob Zider

"Professionally, I have always found Paul to be knowledgeable, well-prepared, insightful, and wise in his judgments. He is not afraid to ask questions, and his passion for learning is always evident. On a more personal level, Paul is trustworthy, honest, open, and a true pleasure to work with. He is a family man with a 'moral compass,' and someone who is consistently polite, respectful of others, and never overbearing when expressing his opinions. Paul possesses the capacity and skills to keep important issues in their proper perspective while always remaining focused on the best ways to get a job done. He is also someone who can build consensus around issues."

Publications and Writing Experience

Paul has authored 49 articles in scientific journals or books, 3 U.S. patents, 22 successful grant applications worth nearly $3 million, and numerous strategic plans, technical reports, and magazine articles.  Writing samples are available on request.
