At the University of Vermont, Patrick Milliken completed courses such as Political Theory, Comparative Political Systems, and Constitutional Law and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in history. During his undergraduate studies, he served as a campaign intern for Vermont secretary of state candidate Jim Condos. Patrick Milliken assisted the campaign manager with fundraising operations, engaged potential voters and donors, and mailed absentee ballots.
A Jericho, Vermont resident, Mr. Milliken traveled widely throughout Europe following graduation from college in 2012. He visited such Western European countries as the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Italy, before continuing his journey across several Eastern European nations, including Albania, Czechoslovakia, and Romania. Within the United States, he has lived in Massachusetts, Montana, Washington, and California. While in Oakland, California, he volunteered with the nonprofit organization City Slicker Farms, which helps establish organic urban farms and backyard gardens that serve disadvantaged members of the West Oakland community.
In Essex, the town immediately west of Jericho, Patrick Milliken currently serves as an editorial assistant for The Lyric, the oldest continuously published traditional poetry magazine in North America. He proofreads editions before publication, readies the quarterly issues for distribution to subscribers, and has assisted with The Lyric’s application for nonprofit status. As a reader and writer, he most admires Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman, as well as works by such authors as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, T.S. Eliot, and John Steinbeck.
