Extracurricular Activities

Soccer

I have played soccer since I was 5 and all the way through high school and now I have been looking for other ways to share my passion for the sport and I have found it in coaching. I have coached teams aged from 5 years olds to 12, both boys and girls.

Dodgeball

In an effort to promote healthy living habits a local hotel and resort sponsored a district-wide dodgeball competition. I coached two co-ed teams.

Young Thespians

I was the Troupe Director of Young Thespians for San Antonio Elementary School. I was charged with the responsibility of coaching any 6th grade student who wished to perform in the five district-wide competitions for Thespians. This was a new and challenging role for me, but the work paid off in student enjoyment.

Student Council

For SY 2012-13 I took on the role of STUCO advisor, representing the upper-grade teachers. Being involved in the student-led politics of our school has given me valuable insight into how to better involve student leadership in the operation of a school.

Projects

Student-Led Newspaper (Paw Print News)

Collaborating with a grade-level partner for her re-certification of her Nation Board Certification we facilitate a monthly student newspaper. Students come up with topics, interview subjects, and write up articles based on those interviews. Issues are published digitally, posted on the school website, and sent out to via a mail-serve list.

School-wide Uniform Improvement Plan - Accreditation Team

As part of the UIP team we aggregated and analyzed data from all standardized tests (TCAP and Scantron) to formulate trends and come up with SMART goals that will help to guide our staff on the next steps

School Leadership Team

The mountainside leadership team has collaborated with our school administration to design a program that will utilize the district accepted "Thinking Maps" as well as integrate educational technology. The program consists of professional development, videos on best practices, and teacher examples.

Educational Technology Endorsement for Teachers and Administrators

Through the federal Territories and Freely Associated States Educational Grant (T&FASEG) I have been given the opportunity to design and facilitate five new hybrid (online and traditional) courses in an Education Technology Endorsement program in the CNMI Public School System. These course follow U.S. standards for professional learning as laid out by Learning Forward (National Staff Development Council) and my districts requirement for 45 contact hours at the rigor of college level courses. I have used skills learned through my Master's program in Educational Technology and my more practical learning through teaching high school courses online in US History and AP US History.

Classroom Response Systems (Clickers)

Our school principal and I worked together to write a grant to purchase two classroom sets of clickers for use at our school. After successfully being approved and receiving the clickers, I immediately began training teachers in our school. Through various trainings and demonstrations many teachers at our school now regularly use the student response system for lessons, pre and post assessments, and for many other unique purposes.

Study Island

I wrote the purchase orders, administered, and maintained a school-wide system for lesson plans, student-response assessments, and online study units through Study Island.

National Elementary Honor Society

Principal James Sablan of San Antonio Elementary, decided to honor the most distinguished students in the school and start a chapter of the NEHS at the school during school year 2012-13. Principal Sablan entrusted the responsibility of starting the chapter with me.

School Webmaster

Since I have begun teaching I have found a classroom website a vital communication tool in the age of technology for keeping the classroom connected with other stakeholders including parents, community members, and the students themselves. Additionally, I have maintained various school websites.

Interscholastic Book Bowl

The school librarian, Ms. Della Castro, and I created an interscholastic book bowl between several schools in SY2012-13. We believed that the program will help students to learn to love reading while engaging in an exciting and rigorous academic competition involving classic and contemporary award-winning juvenile literature.
