Editor in Chief 

Inside Jersey Magazine / The Star-Ledger

Glossy monthly magazine

  • Responsible for all facets of editorial content, including cover and story concepts, assignments and editing.
  • Maintain communication with a rotating staff of 30-plus freelance writers and photographers, as well as work closely with the magazine's design director.
  • Collaborate with the advertising, marketing and special section departments to facilitate ongoing sales and special projects.
  • Oversee monthly print management, including scheduling, production of pages, and coordinating with the pre-press department.
  • Also oversee editorial administration, including the processing of contracts and invoices.

Assistant Managing Editor - Weekend

The Star-Ledger
  • Responsible for weekly production of the Sunday Star-Ledger.
  • Managed and edited staff-produced content for all live news pages and local sections.
  • Directed deadline operation on Saturday for print and online.
  • Job required superb editing and organizational skills and the ability to work collegially with editors and reporters from every department.
  • Multi-tasking was essential as was reacting quickly to breaking news and other events that affected planned content.

Medical and Science Editor

The Star-Ledger
  • Assigned and edited all staff-written medical and science content.
  • Managed two medical and two science reporters writing for the daily and Sunday editions.
  • Edited the science narrative, "The Accidental Artist," which was selected as a finalist for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize in Feature Writing.

Features Editor

The Star-Ledger
  • Editor of the Star-Ledger's daily Today section and Sunday Accent section.
  • Responsible for all facets of producing the paper's features content, including assigning and editing all feature stories.
  • Managed a staff of 16 reporters and two editors and worked closely with the department's lifestyle and entertainment editors, as well as copy editors and designers.
  • This job required intense multi-tasking and exceptional organizational skills to meet various deadlines each day. Both long- and short-term planning was essential, as was the ability to think creatively, react quickly and work well with people.
  • Section won the 1999 Missouri School of Journalism Lifestyle Journalism Award for General Excellence.
  • Edited "The Seekers," a five-part series looking at the biggest unanswered questions in science, which won the 2003 Distinguished Writing Award from the American Society of Newspaper Editors.

Features Editor

The Courier-Post

Cherry Hill, N.J.

  • Editor of the Courier-Post's daily and Sunday Living sections.
  • Responsible for all facets of producing the paper's features content.
  • Managed 12 writers, four editors and numerous freelancers.

Metro Columnist

The Courier-Post
  • Wrote a local general interest column that published three days a week on the paper's South Jersey cover.
  • Won numerous writing awards from the New Jersey and Philadelphia press associations and the National Association of Newspaper Columnists.
  • Published a collection of columns, "Welcome to Exit 4: Enter at Own Risk,"
    August Press, 1994.
