Advanta Bank Corp.

Provided enterprise wide management and leadership to the teams which managed and maintained the IT infrastructure from the data center to the desktops.  Advanta is a mid size bank which had $6 billion in outstanding specializing in the credit card market for small businesses.  It also had both demand deposits and certificates of deposit insured by the FDIC. 

Specific responsibilities and achievements during this period were:

Provide leadership for:

  • 6 domestic teams located in Pennsylvania and Utah spanning the help desk into the C suite support
  • the development and transition for certain functions to an off shore outsource provider
  • annual budgets in excess of 20MM
  • the enterprise IT change management, regulatory compliance (Sarbanes Oxley, FDIC & OCC), payment card industry (PCI) standards,  and systems security

Management of:

  • 3 data centers (1 a disaster recovery site)
  • 350 windows and linux servers, 15 Unix servers
  • 2 storage area networks with over 100 TB of data online
  • over 1800 workstations in up to 6 domestic and 2 international sites

Notable accomplishments of:

  • virtualized over half the server environment and 75% of the workstations.
  • a nearly 100% lights out data center
  • migration of 80% of the contact centers and significant IT Operations functions into an off shore partner
  • migration of the phone systems to Avaya systems utilizing both traditional TDM and VoIP communications
  • implementation of Genesys contact center systems, Verint call recording,  Interwoven web, mirrored data systems, etc.

During this period we implemented the Sarbanes Oxley regulatory compliance processes, the Payment Card Industry standards and raised our IT compliance with the regulatory agencies to the highest level.

First Union National Bank

I was responsible for the day to day operations of and new development on a UNIX based new account acquisition system with an Oracle database.This system utilized neural network technologies and a binary large object read/write structure.I provide leadership to a team of system developers and business analysts and managed vendor and customer relations (both internal and external).Insured compliance to all regulations and policies through working with internal and external audit groups, security and regulatory agencies.Responsible for implementing policy for applications received via the mail, telephone, Internet, etc.Partner with key resources in marketing, credit policy, compliance and various technical resources to develop and implement business-building programs.

In this role I led efforts to: certify the acquisition process for the year 2000 (upgrades to Oracle 8.x, HPUX 11.x, +), sponsored development of a “thin client” user interface (using XML and Java), implementation of multiple custom decision algorithms, reduced expenses by app. 1MM and supported several account acquisition campaigns.

Telephone Center Manager / Solicitation Coordinator1993 – 1997

Provided leadership to two work units with combined annual budgets of 4.8mm.The initial team was the first inbound call center supporting the First Union cards division credit processing.In addition to day to day management of the department I led efforts to develop a GUI front end to stream line data collection and provide agent support.  During this period I led the development of the first web site for First Union and began accepting the first internet applications for the enterprise.
